After the success of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET in 1984, many a movie that moulded together slasher thrills and supernatural chills was rushed into production - from SLAUGHTERHOUSE ROCK (1988) to THE HORROR SHOW (1989) and Wes Craven's own SHOCKER (1989). None, however, were quite as notable nor as notorious as the bombastic blood-spiller BAD DREAMS from 1987, which roped in its own Freddy Krueger alumni with sexy Scream Queen starlet Jennifer Ruben (from A NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST 3: THE DREAM WARRIORS). Also starring the late, great B-thespian Richard Lynch (CUT AND RUN) as a Jim Jones-style reverend who begins to avenge his creepy cult of followers from beyond-the-grave, BAD DREAMS features some frantic and ferocious special effects, plenty of tormented teens and some of the finest frights of its decade! Featuring the legendary Bruce Abbott (RE-ANIMATOR) and produced by Hollywood heavyweight Gale Anne Hurd (ALIENS), whilst featuring a screenplay from DIE HARD's Steven E. de Souza, it is no wonder that BAD DREAMS became one of the most popular slasher classics of the 1980s... and 88 Films is proud to present this work of gruesome genius in horrific HD! • The Taming Of The Shrew [1967]The Taming Of The Shrew | DVD | (19/03/2001) from £7.77   |  Saving you £12.22 (157.27%)   |  RRP £19.99

The 1967 Franco Zeffirelli film of The Taming of the Shrew had all the ingredients to make it a high point in Shakespearian cinema. In Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor it starred the most bankable couple in Hollywood history as the sparring leads in the Bard's quick-firing comic battle of the sexes; and in Zeffirelli, it had a director with a Shakespearian pedigree second to none. But the reality is that this is Burton's picture all the way. His Petruchio is a weighty performance of such intelligence that the whole film is thrown off-kilter whenever he is on screen and the other performers just can't keep up. Apart from Michael Hordern's wonderfully distracted Baptista, Burton is the only actor in total, effortless command of the language. Taylor's bosomy glamour and fiery spirit are ample compensations for her occasionally murderous treatment of Katharina's verse. Whether or not she is really tamed by the end is another matter: those legendary violet eyes suggest otherwise. Ultimately it's a rich, bawdy and colourful romp, with Burton at the peak of his powers. The DVD includes the theatrical trailer, a "making-of" featurette and filmographies. --Piers Ford

BEYOND THE POWER OF AN EXORCIST The mid-1970s saw the rise in popularity of films centering on the subject of parapsychology, led by Carrie Brian De Palma's classic tale of telekinetic terror. Precognition, or future sight, would be the topic under exploration in Robert Allen Schnitzer's contribution to the psychic craze: the chilling and much-overlooked The Premonition. Mother Sheri Bennett (Sharon Farrell, Night of the Comet, Sweet Sixteen) is assailed by terrifying visions in which a strange woman attempts to steal away her five-year-old daughter Janie. Are these bizarre occurrences the result of some sort of mental disturbance, or is something much more sinister afoot? Featuring a haunting score from accomplished classical composer Henry Mollicone, The Premonition has remained unjustly obscure over the years but is heralded as a true classic of '70s US horror moviemaking by genre aficionados.
