  Tom Stoppard's modern stage classic finds a pair of film actors worthy of its verbal japery and existential bewilderment: Gary Oldman and Tim Roth are deliciously locked in as the title characters of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. And yet it remains difficult to tell which one is Rosencrantz and which Guildenstern--even they seem unsure--a clever part of Stoppard's ingenious design. Focusing on a pair of unremarkable characters from Hamlet, Stoppard sees the great play from their confused perspective. Now and again the action of Hamlet sweeps them up, but most of the time R&G are left wondering where they are, what they have been sent for, and why they can't remember anything that happened before the beginning of the play. Richard Dreyfuss (fittingly grandiloquent) is the Player King, who seems to know more about the ominous workings of fiction and tragedy than the heroes do. Stoppard's first outing as a film director is handsomely shot but uncertainly paced--although any time Oldman and Roth go into one of their tennis-match debates on probability, identity, or death, the movie crackles. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern may be the "indifferent children of the earth," but for this brief moment they deserve center stage. --Robert Horton

  The twist of this private-eye show is that in the first episode, gumshoe Marty Hopkirk (Kenneth Cope) is killed off by the villains, subsequently popping up in an immaculate white suit as a ghost visible only to his hardboiled partner Jeff Randall (Mike Pratt). In theory, the supernatural streak--which meant a complex set of rules about Marty's appearances and effects on the physical world--should lead the show into wilder territory, but most episodes squander the team's unique abilities on ordinary cases about blackmail and murder-for-profit. A persistent subplot has the living Jeff getting cosy with the dead Marty's widow Jean (Annette Andre) to the discomfort of her late husband. The elementary effects and the nice underplaying of the leads have a certain period charm, and the show could afford a high calibre of special guest villains and dolly birds. A recent remake with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer hasn't obliterated memories of the original. This disc contains episodes one and two: "My Late Lamented Friend and Partner" and "A Disturbing Case". --Kim Newman

This obviously low budget picture makes the most of limited special effects and striking settings--notably an elevator ride that turns into a free-floating mind game hanging in space and a knock-down, drag-out finale that sends our hapless hero popping up all over the universe. Hauer makes for a surprisingly charismatic mercenary turned father figure and Charles is modestly charming, once he loses the smart-ass wisecracks. His old friend Penny (Desperate Housewives' Teri Hatcher) appears in two episodes: the supernatural-themed season opener "The Secret of Parker House," and later, in "Cleo Rocks," which also features another returning character, though decidedly less friendly--the sinister Murdoc (Michael Des Barres, hissable as always). Also back in rotation this season is Jack Dalton (Bruce McGill), who assists Mac in several adventures before finding himself in a heap of trouble when he's accused of an attempted assassination in "Brainwashed," and Kristian Alfonso as the dangerous Deborah in the season closer "Unfinished Business" (a "clip show" that is probably the weakest episode in the season). There's also a host of well-known performers in guest roles this season, including Cuba Gooding Jr. in "The Challenge," Jason Priestly in "Blood Brothers," and a surprising turn from G. Gordon Liddy in "Collision Course," which puts Mac behind the wheel of a racecar. But the real star of the show, of course, is MacGyver's mind, which manages to get him out of some spectacular jams by the most unusual methods. Action lovers and series fans won't be disappointed by this set. --Paul Gaita
