| RRP On remote Isla Nuba entrepreneur John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) has built the ultimate theme-park, populated by genetically engineered dinosaurs painstakingly reconstructed from DNA extracted from prehistoric amber... and, of course, frogs! Adapted from Michael Crichton's novel, Steven Spielberg's classic blockbuster became a cultural and commercial phenomenon thanks in part to the enduring appeal of all things prehistoric. But the film's extraordinarily realistic digital dinosaurs also showcased the spectacular computer-generated effects which have since become ubiquitous in Hollywood filmmaking. Indeed, in the years since 1993 it is debatable whether any film has revolutionised special effects to such an extent, and this DVD release offers the perfect opportunity to relive its visual and aural splendour (the film was also the first to be released with a DTS soundtrack). Given the rather insipid team of experts (including Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum) sent to approve Hammond's site, there is no doubt that the dinosaurs are the real stars of Spielberg's film. From the benign majesty of the towering brachiosaurus to the reptilian menace of the velociraptors, the inhabitants of Jurassic Park were a radical departure from their stop-motion predecessors, and remain compellingly real in their animalistic pursuit of survival at all costs. Most memorable of all is the T-rex, displaying a spine-chilling combination of physical ferocity and child-like bewilderment in the face of its reincarnation in the modern world. It was no surprise that in The Lost World sequel the T-rex once again took centre stage, but this first appearance still retains a unique power and a seminal place in film history. --Steve Napleton

Rock 'n' Roll Is Born | DVD | (18/03/2008)
from £20.00
| Saving you £-5.01 (N/A%)
| RRP The birth of rock & roll was no accident - but a vital moment in the music's history occurred by chance. This DVD brings to life that remarkable moment and many others told in vivid detail by people who were there when Bill Haley and His Comets' ""Rock Around The Clock"" helped to ignite a cultural revolution. The storytellers include two of the original Comets who played on the record: Marshall Lytle and in the last interview before his death Johnny Grande. Their history is illuminated by rare archive footage including 8mm film shot by Ralph Jones the Comets' drummer from 1955-1960. There are also performances of ""Crazy Man Crazy"" and ""Shake Rattle and Roll"" by the original Comets taken from the little-seen 1954 rock 'n' roll featurette 'Round-Up of Rhythm' plus ""(We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock"" from The Ed Sullivan Show. Recollections by Pat Boone second only to Elvis Presley as the biggest-selling artist of the 1950s and Cleve Duncan lead vocalist of the Penguins place rock & roll in context. Alongside these and many other contributions is the first-hand recall of Peter Ford son of Hollywood legend Glenn Ford. A chance hearing of Peter's copy of ""Rock Around The Clock"" inspired movie director Richard Brooks to use the song in ""Blackboard Jungle "" which he was making with Glenn Ford at the time. The film's subsequent success brought rock & roll to the eyes and ears of the world and placed Bill Haley and the Comets at the heart of the most exciting influential music of the 20th century. The 1 hour 20 minute documentary features all of all the classic Bill Haley and His Comets original recordings re-mastered in 5.1 surround sound including ""(We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock"" ""See You Later Alligator"" ""Rock The Joint"" ""Razzle Dazzle"" and ""Hook Line and Sinker"". Plus performances of ""The Great Pretender"" by The Platters and ""Tutti Frutti"" by Little Richard. Extras include bonus interview footage with Pat Boone Marshall Lytle Johnny Grande Cleve Duncan and Jamie Farr.

| RRP A model for dozens of action films to follow, this box-office hit from 1967 refined a die-hard formula that has become overly familiar, but it's rarely been handled better than it was in this action-packed World War II thriller. Lee Marvin is perfectly cast as a down-but-not-out army major who is offered a shot at personal and professional redemption. If he can successfully train and discipline a squad of army rejects, misfits, killers, prisoners, and psychopaths into a first-rate unit of specialised soldiers, they'll earn a second chance to make up for their woeful misdeeds. Of course, there's a catch: to obtain their pardons, Marvin's band of badmen must agree to a suicide mission that will parachute them into the danger zone of Nazi-occupied France. It's a hazardous path to glory, but the men have no other choice than to accept and regain their lost honor. What makes The Dirty Dozen special is its phenomenal cast including Charles Bronson, Donald Sutherland, Telly Savalas, George Kennedy, Ernest Borgnine, John Cassavetes, Richard Jaeckel, Jim Brown, Clint Walker, Trini Lopez, Robert Ryan, and others. Cassavetes is the Oscar-nominated standout as one of Marvin's most rebellious yet heroic men, but it's the whole ensemble--combined with the hard-as-nails direction of Robert Aldrich--that makes this such a high-velocity crowd pleaser. The script by Nunnally Johnson and Lukas Heller (from the novel by E.M. Nathanson) is strong enough to support the all-star lineup with ample humour and military grit, so if you're in need of a mainline jolt of testosterone, The Dirty Dozen is the movie for you. --Jeff Shannon
