Western star Randolph Scott straps on his guns for one of his very best films, now available on DVD for the first time. After losing his horse in a bull-riding contest, rancher Pat Brennan (Randolph Scott) hitches a lift home on the stagecoach out of the frontier town of Contention. At a remote way station, the stage is ambushed by a ruthless bandit gang led by Usher (Richard Boone). They don't intend leaving any witness - until they discover that one of the passengers is copper heiress Doretta Mims (Maureen O'Sullivan). Now they want $50,000 in ransom from her father - or everybody dies. As tension mounts almost to breaking point, Brennan must discover a way to outwit - and outgun - the outlaw gang before they murder all of their hostages. Adapted from a story by Elmore Leonard, The Tall T is widely acknowledged to be one of the very best films in a series of highly rated westerns starring Randolph Scott and directed by Budd Boetticher. In 2000, The American Library of Congress selected the film for special preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry for being 'culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.' Believed by many to be one of his best films, Randolph Scott excels as expected in a western with many twists...

  • Big Jake [1971]Big Jake | DVD | (06/06/2005) from £6.34   |  Saving you £6.65 (104.89%)   |  RRP £12.99

Big Jake is not one of the Duke's classics, but it's a diverting picture nonetheless. Everyone seems to think that Jacob McCandles is six-feet under ("I thought you was dead" is a running line throughout), so some bad men kidnap his grandson. They want a piece of the family fortune and will kill to get it. Patrick Wayne, the Duke's own son, plays one of Big Jake's kids, and together they start out after the boy's abductors. Richard Boone makes a worthy adversary to Jake's larger-than-life figure, and the final confrontation between the two contains some great gritted-teeth dialogue. Maureen O'Hara is barely in the feature, sharing the same fate as Bobby Vinton as the boy's father, who seems to be onscreen just to get shot. --Keith Simanton

  • Big Brother - Uncut 3 [2002]Big Brother - Uncut 3 | DVD | (09/09/2002) from £12.39   |  Saving you £0.60 (4.84%)   |  RRP £12.99

With more walkers than your average Gary Lineker advert Big Brother 3 got off to a rocky start in losing Sunita (she said she wasn't having fun, but she'd probably realised she would be voted out in the first few weeks) and having Sandy offer us his re-enactment of The Great Escape. At this point the series seemed doomed: the remaining housemates hardly looked like the most entertaining of suspects. Then the media stepped in and turned Jade into Jabba the Hut's sister and Tim into "Nice but Dim". There were also a few hints of romance and some fumbling under the sheets, but all amounted to nothing with confessions of love only occurring after the contestants had left the house. You can choose to succumb to voyeurism or attempt to hide from it, but love it or hate it, no-one can escape the media juggernaut that is Channel 4's favourite reality TV show. On the DVD: Big Brother Uncut 3 offers the best and worst of the households antics in Dolby Digital 2.0 and 4:3 picture ratio--but come on, would you really want to listen to Jade in full surround-sound glory? The DVD extras are pretty standard fare for the BB releases, with multiple angle viewings of the "Word Game" and "Aqua Fun", which basically means you get to see the girls naked from any angle. Along with this you get the embarrassing audition tapes, which make you wonder just why this lot were picked in the first place. But then no sane person would want to enter the Big Brother House, would they? To prove this, comic character Avid Merrion offers his own audition tapes with their bizarre mix of Euro Trash and psycho-stalker extraordinaire--more of which can be seen in Channel 4's comedy Bo' Selecta. --Nikki Disney

  • Khartoum [1966]Khartoum | DVD | (31/03/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

Set in the expanse of the Sudan desert in the midst of holy war, Khartoum (1966) plays like an attempt to work the Lawrence of Arabia magic on the (mostly) true story of eccentric British general Charles "Chinese" Gordon in 1884 North Africa. The magnificent opening desert battle suggests David Lean's epic sweep, at least until the film settles into a more modest story of political games, military standoffs, and a battle of wits and wiles between two fierce leaders. Charlton Heston plays the Christian soldier as cocky, unconventional maverick, and Laurence Olivier (behind heavy make-up and a thick black beard) is almost as good as his cagey nemesis the Mahdi, the Islamic holy warrior on a mission of annihilation. More talk than spectacle, the film falls short of Lawrence but is nonetheless a compelling story of colonial politics, cynical manoeuvring and the unconventional heroics of another colourful British maverick abroad. --Sean Axmaker

  • Stargate SG-1: Season 5Stargate SG-1: Season 5 | DVD | (28/04/2003) from £25.53   |  Saving you £34.46 (134.98%)   |  RRP £59.99

It now seems clear that year five of Stargate will be remembered as the one where something went awry with Daniel Jackson. Lots of behind-the-scenes rumours fuelled the idea of cast tension, but whatever the problem, his sudden departure from the show was obviously via a hastily contrived scenario. In retrospect, there must have been a problem for some while before the weird penultimate episode ("Meridian"). Michael Shanks looks frequently bored in his rare moments of individual screen time as he infiltrates a Goa'uld meeting and even when making friends with a creature everyone else wants dead. In fact, there's only one point when everyone really seems to be having fun, and that's in the spoof 100th episode "Wormhole X-treme!" Most shows go through a run-around, skin-of-their-teeth period awaiting renewal and it certainly seems to have affected storylines this year. For example, a next generation of younger SG teams is introduced. Replacements? The most unfortunate aspect of things however was that not a single episode managed to stand alone on its own merits. Every single story was dependent on a part of the greater interwoven warring species threads. Some of the one-off tales were terrific in and of themselves, but it was as if the writers fell into the trap of having to refer to as much backstory as possible, perhaps to ensure loose ends could be easily wrapped up? Ultimately none of this mattered since the show went on for quite a while. --Paul Tonks

  • Risky Business [1983]Risky Business | DVD | (01/10/1999) from £14.12   |  Saving you £-0.13 (N/A%)   |  RRP £13.99

Little did Tom Cruise know that he would become a box-office superstar after he cranked up some Bob Seeger and played air guitar in his underwear. But there's more to this 1983 hit than the arrival of a hot young star. Making a stylish debut, writer-director Paul Brickman crafted a subtle satire of crass materialism wrapped in an irresistible plot about a crafty high schooler named Joel (Cruise) who goes into risky business with the beguiling prostitute Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) while his parents are out of town. Joel turns his affluent Chicago-suburb home into a lucrative bordello and forms a steamy personal and professional partnership with Lana, but only as long as the two can avoid the vengeful pimp Guido (Joe Pantoliano) and keep their customers happy. A signature film of the 1980s, Risky Business still holds up thanks to Cruise's effortless charm and the movie's timeless appeal as an adolescent male fantasy. --Jeff Shannon

In the 1970s the crime film flourished in Italy as the country went through years of political and social unrest, the so-called ˜Years of Lead'. Italian movie producers would capitalise on these times by producing cheap, violent movies about the country's organised crime and corruption, establishing the genre of the poliziotteschi. One of the most celebrated poliziottesco directors was Fernando Di Leo, a director as concerned with telling entertaining stories as he was with creating socially relevant backdrops. In Di Leo's The Boss, Henry Silva plays mob enforcer Nick Lanzetta, who assassinates key members of a rival gang in order to put his boss in a position to seize power. However, one surviving member of the gang, Cocchi (Pier Paolo Capponi, The Cat o' Nine Tails) plots his revenge involving corrupt cop Torri (Gianni Garko, If You Meet Sartana Pray For Your Death), leading to a bloody series of double-crosses and power plays to find who will ultimately become the boss.
