More intriguing investigations for Agatha Christie's famed Belgian detective... The Adventure Of The Italian Nobleman: Hastings decides to buy an elegant car from Mr Vizzini's showroom. Later that day the messenger is found dead in his flat and Poirot and Hastings are drawn into the gangland underworld of London's Little Italy in a baffling case of elaborate blackmail. It's hard to know who thought it would be a good idea to make a live-action version of Disney's animated classic. The one bright notion anyone had was casting Glenn Close as Disney Übervillainess Cruella de Vil; her flashing eyes and angular features are a perfect match and do credit to what is one of the most indelible animated characters Disney has ever created. The story remains essentially the same, focusing on Cruella's plot to kidnap the puppies of a young married couple (Jeff Daniels and Jolie Richardson) and make them into a coat. But the dreaded John Hughes, who wrote this script, fills it with sadistic slapstick and far too few genuine laughs. The human actors work hard, but to little avail; thankfully, there's a posse of puppies to regularly steal scenes when the going gets dreary--although there are only so many laughs to be had from inappropriate dog puddles. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com
While the little Belgian detective and his English sidekick are enjoying their holidays on the Cornish Riviera a chance meeting with Miss Buckley of nearby End House provides Poirot with the stimulation on which his little grey cells thrive.
Superbly acted drama adapted by Tom Stoppard in which Lewis (Michael Caine) suspects that his wife Elizabeth (Glenda Jackson) must be having an affair. Frustrated with her husband’s jealous attempts to manipulate her Elizabeth decides to confirm Lewis’s suspicions by embarking on a steamy affair with a handsome young German Thomas (Helmut Berger) who claims to be a poet but is in fact a drug dealer...
Malcolm McDowell provides the original idea for and stars as wide-eyed innocent (not for long) Mick Travis in Lindsay Anderson's epic comedy O Lucky Man! Armed with ambition and a work ethic coffee salesman Mick hits the road and finds that desire alone can't bring wealth and status. He meets rich and poor alike... and finds cunning and cruelty across the social spectrum. Ralph Richardson Helen Mirren Arthur Lowe Rachel Roberts Mona Washbourne and other stars in multiple roles knit Mick's picaresque adventures together. And commenting with wit and irony is Alan Price providing a memorable song score. Once you meet Mick you're the lucky one.
A grim, disheartening view of the underside of city life, Q & A is a legal drama with a disturbing twist. Not exactly a whodunit--the guilt of policeman Nick Nolte is established early on--the plot follows the closing of the circle around him. Leading the murder investigation is Timothy Huttons young, idealistic district attorney Al Reilly, who finds himself battling a fraudulent and cynical culture. Racism, corruption and political machinations are all added to the mix, resulting in a film that is just a little too dense and slow moving to capture the imagination. Director Sidney Lumet creates a feeling of enveloping darkness around Hutton, who slowly manages to let the light in and bring the truth to the surface. With an obviously small budget, the film has more of a made-for-television feel than that of a big blockbuster and some of the performances err too much on the side of cliché. The concept of the New York melting pot is fairly effectively dismissed by the film, painting a picture of distrust between communities that often spills into verbal and physical violence. Not quite as unremittingly bleak as Harvey Kietels Bad Lieutenant, Q & A is still a tough, dark piece of cinema. On the DVD: Q & A is very much a film of the night, with much of the action taking place either in the shadows or in rooms with harsh, artificial light. The picture on the DVD reflects that perfectly, although the lack of budget is hard to disguise. The soundtrack quality is good, if not startling, but there are no extras aside from the movies theatrical trailer. All in all, its a fairly average package. --Phil Udell
Another intriguing investigation for Agatha Christie's famed Belgian detective... The Mysterious Affair At Styles was Agatha Christie's debut novel and was first published in 1920. Staying nearby as guests of the Cavendishs' are a group of Belgian refugees including much to Hastings' surprise his old acquaintance from the Belgian Police Hercule Poirot. Before long the pair are pitting their little grey cells against family machinations and manipulation; murder and mayhem; money and mendacity.

By all rights, Alex Cox's absurdist spaghetti western Straight to Hell, should be up there in the canon of must-see cult movies. It was written in three days and filmed gonzo-style in six weeks in the Andalusian desert landscape of Almeria, Spain, on an abandoned film set originally built for Savage Cowboys, a 1969 Charles Bronson western. The cast includes the good, the bad and the ugly of rock and roll--namely Joe Strummer, Courtney Love (in her first starring role) and Shane McGowan--and cameos from Dennis Hopper, Grace Jones and Jim Jarmusch. It also features a pre-Reservoir Dogs plot concerning three sharp-suited but incompetent hitmen on the lam in the desert with the proceeds of a bank heist and a pregnant girlfriend in tow (Love). There they stumble upon a remote, ramshackle town, home to a gang of coffee-guzzling gunslingers called the McMahons (the Pogues) who initially accept the bumbling assassins as one of their own. But the appearance of shadowy industrialist IG Farben (Hopper) throws the precarious peace into a trigger-happy turmoil. Despite the promise, the film was almost universally panned on its release, the main criticism being that although the cast and crew seemed to having a blast, not much thought was put into translating the joke to the audience. It's certainly anarchic and frivolous, but also silly and pointless. Sy Richardson as the Jheri-curled Norwood who steals the show, remaining stoic and super-cool as the chaos rages around him. On the DVD: "Back to Hell", a 20-minute feel-good featurette, reunites the majority of the cast members (minus Courtney Love) 14 years on to reminisce on their experience making the film. At the end, Alex Cox cannily manages to elicit guarantees from the actors to appear in a mooted sequel. The original dialogue plays at low volume underneath the commentary track, making it hard to hear what the filmmakers are saying at various points. A promo video for the Pogues rendition of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is tacked on at the end, but looks as if it was sourced from a worn videotape. --Chris Campion
