  • The Flashing Blade [1967]The Flashing Blade | DVD | (24/09/2001) from £15.98   |  Saving you £11.00 (78.63%)   |  RRP £24.99

The Flashing Blade is a tale of high adventure set in 1630 as the dashing Chevalier de Recci (Robert Etcheverry) undertakes a dangerous mission across occupied territory to avert war between France and Spain. This 13-episode serial was made for French television in 1967, and in dubbed form regularly shown on the BBC during school holidays from 1969 through the 1970s (usually when 1965's Adventures of Robinson Crusoe was having a rest). This release is aimed at that generation who, from the spine-tingling theme song onward, remember the show with tremendous affection. Like the classic Hollywood movie serials, each 23-minute episode packs in a couple of action sequences; some plot twists, a little comic relief and very variable acting and costumes. For a children's programme the story is remarkably complex, and takes a while to gather pace. The colours have faded, the use of classical music is clumsy, but the dubbing is surprisingly accomplished. The swashbuckling action is at odds with the more serious historical drama, but viewed with nostalgia The Flashing Blade is thoroughly entertaining vintage TV. --Gary S Dalkin

A carefully crafted open-to-everything mixture of live-wire reality and controlled narrative  Medium Cool is the debut fiction feature of Haskell Wexler who had already established himself as one of Hollywood’s premiere cinematographers in the post-studio-system-era on such films as Elia Kazan’s America America and Mike Nichols’ Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. In 1968  he hurled himself into the tear-gas of the cultural-political moment. The result was alongside Bonnie and Clyde and Easy Rider a seminal early work of what came to be known as “the New Hollywood”. John (the prolific Robert Forster who would find latter-day fame in Jackie Brown  Mulholland Drive and Breaking Bad) plays a television cameraman who has become disenchanted as a creative subservient to the mainstream. Eileen (Verna Bloom latterly of High Plains Drifter and After Hours) depicts a newly relocated war-widow swept up in the maelstrom of the conflicts of the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago — the actual events of which serve as the spontaneous backdrop for Wexler’s picture. Documentary and narrative blur in the upheaval and chaos and perhaps only Peter Watkins’ Punishment Park stands analogous as such a powerful statement on the politics media and cinema of the late-‘60s — and the present. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Haskell Wexler’s Medium Cool for the first time in the UK on Blu-ray and DVD. Special Features Including: Gorgeous 1080p presentation of the film on Blu-ray from the 4K digital film transfer approved by director Haskell Wexler Original trailer Booklet featuring new and archival writings and imagery

One of Alfred Hitchcock's finest pre-Hollywood films, the 1936 Secret Agent stars a young John Gielgud as a British spy whose death is faked by his intelligence superiors. Reinvented with a new identity and outfitted with a wife (Madeleine Carroll), Gielgud's character is sent on assignment with a cold-blooded accomplice (Peter Lorre) to assassinate a German agent. En route, the counterfeit couple keeps company with an affable American (Robert Young), who turns out to be more than he seems after the wrong man is murdered by Gielgud and Lorre. Dense with interwoven ideas about false names and real identities, about appearances as lies and the brutality of the hidden, and about the complicity of those who watch the anarchy that others do, Secret Agent declared that Alfred Hitchcock was well along the road to mastery as a filmmaker and, more importantly, knew what it was he wanted to say for the rest of his career. --Tom Keogh
