The Tomorrow People was a children's science fiction adventure series launched in 1973 as ITV's answer to Doctor Who. In the opening five-part adventure "Slaves of Jedikiah" we meet Stephen (Peter Vaughan-Clarke) who is about to "break-out" to the next level of human evolution, becoming a Homo Superior, or "Tomorrow Person". Developing telepathic and telekenetic powers, as well as the ability to teleport, he becomes the target for mysterious American cult leader, Jedikiah (Francis de Wolff). Already secretly established with biological supercomputer TIM in an abandoned underground tunnel are three Tomorrow People--John (Nicholas Young), Carol (Sammie Winmill) and Kenny (Stephen Salmon)--who rescue Stephen and then find themselves on a damaged starship in a race against time to save its alien captain. Although the budget was low--the tin robot with his head on fire is particularly laughable--the story is ambitious and the utilitarian special effects are in plentiful supply. There's a trippy, post-2001: A Space Odyssey quality to some of the visuals, a great theme tune and acting of decidedly pantomime calibre. The Tomorrow People themselves come from a past in which teenagers still say "smashing!", but the fantasy of advanced, pacifist children saving the world had a lasting appeal, enough that the show ran eight seasons, then was revived for three more in the 1990s. --Gary S Dalkin

A group of Mexican revolutionaries murder a town priest and a number of his christian followers. Ten years later a widow arrives in town intent to take revenge from her husband's killers. This film starts in spectacular fashion as a gang of rebels gun down the entire congregation of a church young and old including the priest. The barbaric nature of this opening continues throughout A Town Called Hell. The majority of the movie is set in the Mexican town of Bastardo which is under the leadership of Don Carlos (Telly Savalas). A hearse arrives at the gates with an empty coffin and two passengers - Alvira (Stella Stevens) a blonde widower clothed in black and her mysterious unnamed companion (Dudley Sutton). She is searching for the man that killed her husband and offers Carlos gold if he will hand over the guilty man - who she believes to be named Aguila.

In the vastly overrated 1998 book Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, author Peter Biskind puts the blame for Hollywood's blockbuster mentality at least partially on Steven Spielberg's box-office success with this adaptation of Peter Benchley's bestselling novel, Jaws. But you can't blame Spielberg for making a terrific movie, which Jaws definitely is. The story of a Long Island town whose summer tourist business is suddenly threatened by great-white-shark attacks on humans bypasses the potboiler trappings of Benchley's book and goes straight for the jugular with beautifully crafted, crowd-pleasing sequences of action and suspense supported by a trio of terrific performances by Roy Scheider (as the local sheriff), Richard Dreyfuss (as a shark specialist), and particularly Robert Shaw (as the old fisherman who offers to hunt the shark down). The sequences on Shaw's boat--as the three of them realize that in fact the shark is hunting them--are what entertaining moviemaking is all about. It's odd that the cornerstone of the new edition is a 10-year-old documentary. Shot for the laserdisc release (the unofficial 20th anniversary edition), the 2-hour "The Making of Jaws" is an excellent telling of how this film was made and became the top grossing film (and launched the career of extras filmmaker Laurent Bouzereau). An hour-long edited version appeared on the 25th anniversary DVD. Here's what else different from the 25th anniversary DVD: an interesting a 9-minute vintage featurette shot for British TV that has never been seen in the States; a few additions to the extensive "Jaws Archives" (production stills, storyboards and the like), and a few new fragments in the deleted scene roll. The image is the same excellent transfer as before but this time you can get the DTS and Dolby sound on the same disc plus a nice 60-page photo journal. A seaworthy set but hardly worth trading in your old DVD. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

  • Custer Of The West [1967]Custer Of The West | DVD | (01/08/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

General George Armstrong Custer has been portrayed as everything from a vain but ultimately honourable hero (Errol Flynn in They Died with Their Boots On) to an insane, pompous incompetent (Richard Mulligan in the biting Little Big Man), but few have attempted an ambitious look at the man in all his contradictions. Robert Siodmak's Custer of the West, his final American production, attempts the task with fine results, portraying the career soldier as a pragmatist, a disciplinarian with a bullying streak, a loner and ultimately an Old World romantic in the modern age. Robert Shaw gives the role a regal bearing (though his continental accent keeps drifting in) and a sense of dignity, depicting a man who ironically identifies more with the Indians than with the US Army. Jeffrey Hunter and Ty Hardin co-star as his battling junior officers and Robert Ryan is memorable in a brief appearance as a gold-mining deserter. Shooting in handsome widescreen and vivid Technicolor, Siodmak makes his outdoor settings come alive and nimbly handles the many action scenes, most notably a chase that sends an escaping soldier whooshing down a log water chute like a Disney ride. Siodmak's sweeping visuals deliver both grand images and ironic counterpoint, but ultimately Custer of the West eschews the heroism of Hollywood adventures for a portrait of the corrupt state of the American military and one man's hopeless fight against it. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

Battle Of Britain (Dir. Guy Hamilton 1969): This is a spectacular re-telling of a true story that shows courage at its inspiring best. Few defining moments can change the outcome of war; but when the outnumbered Royal Air Force defied unsurmountable odds in engaging the German Luftwaffe they may well have altered the course of history! The Train (Dir. John Frankenheimer 1964): Inspired by a true incident during World War II in 'The Train' Burt Lancaster plays a French Resistance fighter doggedly attempting to stop a train used by the Nazis (led by Paul Scofield as Colonel Von Waldheim) to steal precious French art treasures in the summer of 1944. Featuring spectacular action sequences expertly directed by John Frankenheimer 'The Train' is a truly thrilling war film. The Oscar-nominated screenplay by Franklin Coen and Frank Davis superbly recreates the tension of this heroic episode.
