Ingmar Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage opens with a couple--Marianne (Liv Ullmann) and Johann (Erland Josephson)--being interviewed for a magazine. Every moment seems to teeter on the brink of some rupture; just as they start to get comfortable, the interviewer has them freeze for a photograph. After making some bland, general statements, they both start admitting intimate details, confessing that they were brought together by mutual misery, then cheerfully claiming that theirs is a model marriage. The entirety of Scenes from a Marriage--which chronicles their emotional relationship even after a divorce and marriages to other people--continues to have these contradictions, moments of honesty and self-deception, of cruelty and kindness, concern and self-obsession, all laid bare by the skilful actors and the subtle, constantly shifting screenplay. Every scene is a small movie unto itself; in fact, Scenes from a Marriage was originally a six-episode TV show, carefully edited down into a unified film. This is one of Bergman's most immediate and accessible works, concerned more with the facts of human behaviour than symbolism or abstract themes. Bergman understands how to balance what could be horrible pain and despair with the characters' earnest efforts to improve their lives. His imitators reduce everything to sheer suffering and alienation; Bergman sees the best in his characters, even when their actions are terrible. This 1973 film won numerous awards, including several acting honours for Ullmann. --Bret Fetzer

Spencer Strasmore and an endearing group of colleagues, rivals and pro-football clients return for a new season of HBO's hit comedy from Steve Levinson (Entourage) that digs deeper into the extravagant, high-stakes, big-money world of professional football. This season, having refused to compromise his principles by joining an alliance with the filthy-rich Anderson brothers to move a football franchise to Las Vegas, Spencer (Dwayne Johnson) and his partner Joe Krutel (Rob Corddry) set their sights on expanding their firm's foothold in the client-management business, weighing an opportunity to purchase an extreme-sports LA outfit run by the fiercely autonomous Lance Klians (Russell Brand). Meanwhile, Ricky Jerret (John David Washington) eyes a comeback while chafing at his new life as a father; Charles (Omar Benson Miller) faces the myriad challenges of being a general manager; Vernon (Donovan W. Carter) continues his profligate ways, to the chagrin of his sidekick Reggie (London Brown); and Jason (Troy Garity) tries to set Spencer up with a high-school prodigy, Quincy Crawford, and his equally impressive mother Jayda.

Truman Capote's best seller, a breakthrough narrative account of real-life crime and punishment, became an equally chilling film in the hands of writer-director RICHARD BROOKS (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof). Cast for their unsettling resemblances to the killers they play, ROBERT BLAKE (Lost Highway) and SCOTT WILSON (The Great Gatsby) give authentic, unshowy performances as Perry Smith and Richard Hickock, who in 1959 murdered a family of four in Kansas during a botched robbery. Brooks brings a detached, documentary-like starkness to this uncompromising view of an American tragedy and its aftermath; at the same time, stylistically In Cold Blood is a filmmaking master class, with clinically precise editing, chiaroscuro black-and-white cinematography by the great CONRAD L.
