The fifth season of Outlander sees a continuation of Claire and Jamie's fight to protect those they love, as they navigate the trials and tribulations of life in colonial America. Establishing a home in the New World is by no means an easy task, particularly in the wild backcountry of North Carolina and perhaps most significantly during a period of dramatic political upheaval. The Frasers strive to flourish within a society which, as Claire knows all too well, is unwittingly marching towards Revolution, as members of the elite ruling classes struggle to stifle an alarming undercurrent of unrest, trigged by the Regulator Movement, and to maintain order in the Province. Against this backdrop, which soon heralds the birth of the new American nation, Claire and Jamie have built a home together at Fraser's Ridge. Jamie must now defend this home established on land granted to him by the Crown despite the fact that this new mantle of responsibility sees him pitted against his godfather, Murtagh Fitzgibbons, a leader of the Regulator Rebellion. Jamie is forced to hide the true nature of his relationship with Murtagh from Governor Tryon, who has ordered Jamie to put an end to the unrest sweeping North Carolina. Claire, in turn, seeks to put her own skills and medical expertise to use in keeping her family together and safe from harm. Coupled with her knowledge of the future, she decides that she must be daring and have the courage to take risks, whatever the consequences may be Meanwhile, Brianna and Roger MacKenzie struggle to find their respective places in this world: striving to chase away the shadow cast over their lives by Stephen Bonnet, which continues to loom over them, as they raise their son in this brave new world. For the Frasers and their family, home is more than simply a site in which they live, it is the place in which they are laying the foundations for the rest of their lives.

With a story that's too flimsy to support its running time, this road-mo vie comedy has plenty of problems, but at its best it's a surprisingly inspired vehicle for the clever teaming of Tim Robbins and Martin Lawrence. Robbins plays an addled advertising executive who comes home early one day and discovers his wife in bed with his boss. To make matters worse, he's later carjacked by a struggling, unemployed family-man-turned-petty-thief (Lawrence), and that's when he loses his cool completely. He takes the carjacker hostage and recruits him on a road-trip scheme of revenge against his wife and boss. Plotting to break into his boss' high-security vault, Robbins gets a criminal assist from Lawrence, but they're also on the run from another pair of would-be thieves who trail them to the vault's location. The routine plot of Nothing To Lose is occasionally limp and sluggish, but writer-director Steve Oedekerk (who makes a wacky cameo appearance as a security guard) mines comedy gold during several scenes that detour from the plot for the sake of sheer lunacy. Robbins and Lawrence have great comedic chemistry (if you can tolerate Lawrence's constant profanity), and although the movie ends on a false note with some unlikely turns of fate, it's definitely good for more than a few solid laughs. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

  • Die Hard Quadrilogy - Die Hard/Die Hard 2/Die Hard With A Vengence/Die Hard 4.0Die Hard Quadrilogy - Die Hard/Die Hard 2/Die Hard With A Vengence/Die Hard 4.0 | DVD | (29/10/2007) from £9.23   |  Saving you £25.76 (279.09%)   |  RRP £34.99

Now joined by a hit fourth instalment, the Die Hard Quadrilogy is, bluntly, an essential set for any self-respecting fan of action cinema. The gold, of course, is the original Die Hard, a flat-out five star classic pretty much without equal. Introducing Bruce Willis' John McClane as an ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation, it's littered with great lines, great characters, and genre-defining moments. Plus, in Alan Rickman, it has one of the finest cinematic villains of the past few decades. Die Hard 2: Die Harder inevitably dilutes matters, this time switching the action to Washington's Dulles International Airport. But with Willis and a good number of characters returning from the original, it's a fun--if at times brutal--ride, that scores highly in the entertainment stakes. Die Hard: With A Vengeance, the third film in the series, pretty much strips away the bulk of the supporting cast, and replaces them with the not-significant figure of Samuel L Jackson. It changes the dynamic of the film into a buddy-buddy movie, albeit a good one. And again, it's a ride that's hard not to enjoy, with Jeremy Irons giving good measure as McClane's chief foe. Finally, Die Hard 4.0 is a real surprise. Given the fact that it arrived over a decade after the third film, it finds Willis and relative newcomer Justin Long shouldering an entertaining, old fashioned action film, that papers over its occasional cracks by asking its lead actor to ramp things up a gear when necessary. And watching John McClane do what he does--even when any hint of reality is thrown out of the window near the end--is endlessly entertaining. So while none of the sequels have matched the peerless original, the Die Hard Quadrilogy nonetheless delivers one classic, and three very enjoyable action movies. And you can't argue with that kind of hit rate. Always, always bet on McClane... --Simon Brew

The second sequel to the mould-making action film Die Hard brings Detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) to New York City to face a better villain than in Die Hard 2. Played by Jeremy Irons, he's the brother of the Germanic terrorist-thief Alan Rickman played in the original film. But this bad guy has his sights set higher: on the Federal Reserve's cache of gold. As a distraction, he sets McClane running fool's errands all over New York--and eventually, McClane attracts an unintentional partner, a Harlem dry cleaner (Samuel L Jackson) with a chip on his shoulder. Some great action sequences, though they can't obscure the rather large plot holes in the film's final 45 minutes. --Marshall Fine
