Margaret Thatcher is one of the world's most well-known public figures. But how much do we really know about her as a person? In this witty humorous and imaginative drama Britain's first female Prime Minister is portrayed as you've never imagined her. An attractive 25-year-old woman up against that most conservative and male of all institutions - the British Conservative Party. Beginning on the night she met her husband-to-be Denis the film tells of the young Margaret Thatcher's steely determination to get selected to a 'winnable' Tory seat in the Fifties and imagines what might have gone on behind the scenes during her ten-year struggle as she was rejected by a succession of five home counties Tory selection committees and finally - against considerable local opposition - selected for the seat she was to be identified with for the rest of her political career - Finchley!
Set in the ancient English city of York, Eternal Law is about angels living amongst us, helping and guiding humans when they are at their most desperate. The series starts with one grumpy, seen-it-all-a-million times angel called Zak arriving to start a fresh tour of duty with his new colleague, the constantly amazed neophyte, Tom, who has never before spent time with humans. They live in a ramshackle house stuffed with books and paintings, where they are looked after by the beautiful, mysterious Mrs Sheringham. We discover that in his previous tour of duty Zak did a terrible, completely forbidden thing - he fell in love with a human woman, Hannah. To his horror he realises that Hannah has been put in York to tempt him, to test him. Although he loves her with every fibre of his body he knows he can never be with her. It is a cruel, bruised, aching romance. There are angels in all walks of life but our angels are lawyers. Which means that - every episode - they have to deal with humans at their lowest and most exposed. It could be a man standing trial for murder; a bitter custody battle; a fight to save an Old People's home; a frightened young squaddie accused of cowardice. Our angels strive their best to fight for their clients, to win their cases, to put them back on the straight and narrow. They don't always win but they always fight to the last.Eternal Law is emotional, funny, fresh. Each episode ends with Zak and Tom high up on York Minster, wings out, sharing a bottle of wine and talking about this week's case. They find human beings complicated, contradictory, vain, baffling, greedy, passionate, illogical... and utterly, compellingly wonderful.

Based freely on the classic novels by C.S. Forester, Hornblower is a series of TV films following the progress of a young officer through the ranks of the British navy during the Napoleonic Wars. The series greatest asset is the handsome and charismatic Ioan Gruffudd in the lead role, surely a major star in the making. For television films the production values are very good, though as Titanic, Waterworld and The Perfect Storm demonstrated, filming an aquatic adventure is a very expensive business, and it is clear that the Hornblower dramas simply make the best of comparatively small budgets. No more faithful to Forester's books than the 1951 Gregory Peck classic Captain Horatio Hornblower, the real inspiration seems to have come from the success of Sharpe, starring Sean Bean, which likewise featured a British hero in the Napoleonic Wars. Nevertheless, while rather more easy going than the real British navy of the time, the Hornblower saga delivers an entertaining adventure, greatly enhanced by the presence of such guest stars as Denis Lawson, Cheri Lunghi, Ronald Pickup and Anthony Sher. "The Frogs and the Lobsters" provides a tough, complex and surprisingly violent drama concerning an attempt to mount a royalist counter-offensive against Revolutionary France.--Gary S Dalkin
An affectionately wicked parody of the British Costume Drama genre by writer/director Gary Sinyor, Stiff Upper Lips stars Peter Ustinov (in one of his final roles) alongside a stellar cast that includes Prunella Scales, Georgina Cates, Samuel West, Brian Glover, Frank Finlay and Sean Pertwee. No cliché is left unparodied in what Time Out calls frequently silly, consistently spot on, and beautifully acted - this may be obvious, but it's a delight ... Spiffing! Ivory Hall, England, 1908. Like a roller coaster ready to fly off its rails, Van Helsing rockets to maximum velocity and never slows down. Having earned blockbuster clout with The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, writer-director Stephen Sommers once again plunders Universal's monster vault and pulls out all the stops for this mammoth $148-million action-adventure-horror-comedy, which opens (sans credits) with a terrific black-and-white prologue that pays homage to the Universal horror classics that inspired it. The plot pits legendary vampire hunter Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) against Dracula (the deliciously campy Richard Roxburgh), his deadly blood-sucking brides, and the Wolfman (Will Kemp) in a two-hour parade of outstanding special effects (980 in all) that turn Sommers' juvenile plot into a triple-overtime bonus for CGI animators. In alliance with a Transylvanian princess (Kate Beckinsale) and the Frankenstein monster (Shuler Hensley), Van Helsing must prevent Dracula from hatching his bat-winged progeny, and there's so much good-humored action that you're guaranteed to be thrilled and exhausted by the time the 10-minute end-credits roll. It's loud, obnoxious, filled with revisionist horror folklore, and aimed at addicted gamers and eight-year-olds, but this colossal monster mash (including Mr. Hyde, just for kicks) will never, ever bore you. --Jeff Shannon
