Rules of Engagement opens strongly with a Vietnam battle sequence that sets the stage for the rest of the story. But then director William Friedkin knows a thing or two about staging harrowing action sequences, and if you don't believe that, you've never seen The French Connectionor To Live and Die in LA. Unfortunately, Friedkin can't do much about the implausible plot that follows, in which the Marine commander, played by the always-terrific Samuel L Jackson, is accused of slaughtering innocent civilians (who actually were shooting at him and his men). He must rely on an old Marine buddy--a lawyer played by Tommy Lee Jones--to get him through the jury-rigged court martial. But the central premise--that an evil presidential aide would perjure himself and destroy evidence simply to maintain good relations with US allies in the Middle East, rather than defending a highly decorated Marine colonel who risked his life--is inevitably hard to swallow. And the ending is even flimsier. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

Noted filmmaker John Boorman (DELIVERANCE, THE GENERAL, THE TAILOR OF PANAMA) addresses the complex emotional scars leftover from Apartheid in South Africa in IN MY COUNTRY. The events of the film take place during hearings conducted in 1996 by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The purpose of the hearings was to shed light on the atrocities committed during the time of persecution. Anna Malan is a native Afrikaner poet whose is covering the hearings for state radio. During the proceedings, she meets Langston Whitfield an American covering the matter for the Washington Post. Initially, the two don't get along. He thinks she shares collective guilt for cruelty that was carried out; she thinks he's a stubborn and ignorant American. Getting past those unfounded first impressions, the two fall in love. Adapted from author Antjie Krog's memoirs COUNTRY OF MY SKULL, the film features strong performances from both leads and by Brendan Gleeson in a supporting role as Colonel De Jager. IN MY COUNTRY asks an intriguing question about who should take the blame for what happened; the leaders, the soldiers, or the people who watched it happen and never protested.

The story of Mel Gibson's stately anti-hero begins in Mad Max, George Miller's low-budget debut, in which Max is a "Bronze" (cop) in an unspecified post-apocalyptic future with a buddy-partner and family. But, unlike most films set in the devastated future, Mad Max is notable because it is poised between our industrialised world and total regression to medieval conditions. The scale tips towards disintegration when the Glory Riders burn into town on their bikes like an overcharged cadre of Brando's Wild Ones. Representing the active chaos that will eventually overwhelm the dying vestiges of civil society they take everything dear to Max, who then has to exact due revenge. His flight into the same wilds that created the villains artfully sets up the morally ambiguous character of the subsequent films. --Alan E Rapp, Amazon.com

  • Van Helsing [UMD Universal Media Disc]Van Helsing | UMD | (05/09/2005) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Like a roller coaster ready to fly off its rails, Van Helsing rockets to maximum velocity and never slows down. Having earned blockbuster clout with The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, writer-director Stephen Sommers once again plunders Universal's monster vault and pulls out all the stops for this mammoth $148-million action-adventure-horror-comedy, which opens (sans credits) with a terrific black-and-white prologue that pays homage to the Universal horror classics that inspired it. The plot pits legendary vampire hunter Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) against Dracula (the deliciously campy Richard Roxburgh), his deadly blood-sucking brides, and the Wolfman (Will Kemp) in a two-hour parade of outstanding special effects (980 in all) that turn Sommers' juvenile plot into a triple-overtime bonus for CGI animators. In alliance with a Transylvanian princess (Kate Beckinsale) and the Frankenstein monster (Shuler Hensley), Van Helsing must prevent Dracula from hatching his bat-winged progeny, and there's so much good-humored action that you're guaranteed to be thrilled and exhausted by the time the 10-minute end-credits roll. It's loud, obnoxious, filled with revisionist horror folklore, and aimed at addicted gamers and eight-year-olds, but this colossal monster mash (including Mr. Hyde, just for kicks) will never, ever bore you. --Jeff Shannon

  • The Michael Haneke TrilogyThe Michael Haneke Trilogy | DVD | (04/12/2006) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £39.99

The Seventh Continent (1989): Described by Haneke as a reflection on ""the progressive emotional glaciation of Austria "" The Seventh Continent focuses on George (Dieter Berner) a middling engineer and his sardonic wife Anna (Birgit Doll). Unable to empathize with their daughter's compulsion for lying and uninterested in each other's emotional well-being the couple turns their pedestrian way of life into a vortex of subjective malaise. And while a recurring ad for an Australian vacation stands as a signal of potential blissfulness the couple's perfunctory melancholy eventually materialized into barbarism. Based on a true story and filmed as a succession of beautifully composed and yet mundane tableaux this unsentimental depiction of individual and family collapse ""ranks among the most truly terrifying in modern cinema"" (Michael Wilmington Chicago Tribune). More than a metaphor of hope and escape The Seventh Continent is a meticulous dive into the postmodern disregard of affect - and a stark look at lives severed from feelings. Benny's Video (1993): Winner of the FIPRESCI award given by the International Federation of Film Critics in 1993 Benny's Video is the second installment of Michael Haneke's (The Piano Teacher Cache) ""emotional glaciation"" trilogy. Written and directed by Haneke the bone-chilling story opens with the amateur footage of a pig being slaughtered with a butcher gun. This unceremonious recording is owned by 14-year-old Benny (Arno Frisch; Haneke's Funny Gamers) a boy whose preferred mediums of experience are video cameras action movies and the surveillance monitors placed in his room. Accustomed to a trite routine of school activities daily visits to a local video store and hours in front of his bedroom TV Benny finds himself enthralled by his tape of a slaughtered swing. Staying alone is his parents' apartment Benny eventually brings home an unknown girl immediately exposing her to the rapturous videotaping. Then after revealing that he stole the gun that took the pig's life Benny coldly shoots his guest and turns his unwrought curiosity into a slaughter video franchise. ""I once saw a TV program about the tricks they use in action films "" says Benny. ""It's all ketchup and plastic."" By colliding the differences between frames and flesh Haneke's sophomore theatrical release offers a lucid depiction of human beings deprived of their capacity to empathize with - and be hurt by - others. 71 Fragments Of A Chronology Of Chance (1994): With his signature cold cerebral style his long slow takes and meticulous action Austrian director Michael Haneke presents a series of isolated scenes of unrelated people that culminates in an act of sudden and senseless violence in a bank. 71 Fragments Of A Chronology Of Chance delves into some of the prevalent themes of Haneke's earlier films The Seventh Continent and Benny's Video: existential isolation the oppressive force of contemporary western civilization the effects of television on human experience and sudden inscrutable violence. Similar to Antonioni Haneke has become one of the contemporary cinema's greatest provocateurs deliberately withholding crucial information and denying any audience expectation. The eerie and beautiful 71 Fragments Of A Chronology Of Chance hovers between a terrible nihilism and a tenuous humanism.
