  • Come Back To The 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean [Dual Format] [Blu-ray]Come Back To The 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean | Blu Ray | (22/07/2019) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Eureka Entertainment to release Robert Altman's COME BACK TO THE 5 & DIME, JIMMY DEAN, JIMMY DEAN, the fantastical character driven comedy starring Sandy Dennis, Cher, Karen Black and Kathy Bates, for the first time ever in the UK, in a Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) edition as part of The Masters of Cinema Series from 22 July 2019. Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean is one of the wonderful highlights of an under-appreciated chapter of director Robert Altman's career. Between the box office disappointment of Popeye (1980) and the explosive comeback of The Player (1992), Altman returned to lower-budgeted, independent filmmaking, often boldly experimenting with how theatre work could be inventively adapted for cinema and television. This period of Altman's oeuvre also includes such masterworks as Streamers (1983), Secret Honor (1984), and Tanner '88 (1988), but was initiated by Come Back, and this funny, touching film of the play by Ed Graczyk (who adapted it for the screen) is a triumph. Altman's film also jump-started the serious acting career of Cher, nominated for a Golden Globe for her role as Sissy, one of the Disciples of James Dean, an all-women fan club devoted to the late actor, meeting for a reunion at a crumbling Woolworth's in a small Texas town in 1975. Joined by group leader Mona (Sandy Dennis) and the glamorous, initially mysterious Joanne (Karen Black), the women recall their love for Dean, and the club that began twenty years earlier when the actor was in a nearby town filming Giant, and the fatal car accident that followed. Soon, as more memories of 1955 are recalled, secrets are revealed and old friendships are put to the test. Reuniting Altman with his previous stars Dennis (That Cold Day in the Park) and Black (Nashville), and providing Kathy Bates with an early feature role, Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean is a study of nostalgia's ability to distort the past, and another of the director's fascinating portraits of the friendships between women. It's also one of Altman's warmest and most entertaining movies. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Robert Altman's Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean for the first time ever in the UK in a Dual Format edition. One of Disney's less popular animated movies, for absolutely no good reason at all, because it's an excellent story, simply and expertly told. The box blurb rather confusingly compares it to Bambi, but this is a story which has rather more to do with how social conventions can divide friendships than the coming-of-age subtext which underlies the latter. The story is perhaps predictable--a fox cub and a puppy play together as friends, not realising that their places in the scheme of things dictate that they will grow up to become hunter and hunted. Of course, eventually they see the light and it all ends happily, but even so the story promotes the importance of tolerance. The master-stroke, however, is the gradually evolving realisation that the aggressive prejudices which we all stand to inherit from society are nothing more that the products of stupidity and manipulation, and should be treated with the contempt they deserve. Good stuff for kids and adults alike. Trivia buffs might like to know that this is one of the films Tim Burton worked on at Disney, his first job after graduating from college. --Roger Thomas

Director Robert Englund (the iconic Freddy Kruger from the Nightmare on Elm Street series) dials up a gothic tale of high-tech horror in 976-EVIL. High school underdog Hoax (Stephen Geoffreys - Fright Night) fills up the idle hours in his seedy little hometown fending off the local leather-jacketed thugs, avoiding his overbearing mother (Sandy Dennis) and dreaming of a date with trailer park temptress Suzie (Lezlie Deane), But his quietly desperate life takes a terrifying turn when his cousin introduces him to an unusual new hobby phoning in for his horrorscope. Hoax is hooked up with a compellingly hideous demonic force that slowly begins to overtake his entire life and now there's more than just a phone bill to pay for anyone who ever dared cross the neighbourhood nerd. Bette Midler plays a Janis Joplin-like singer overwhelmed by stardom and its excesses. Mark Rydell (On Golden Pond) directs what is a kind of hybrid showcase for Midler's concert talents and a standard pop biopic, with the usual rhythms of desire, success, betrayal, failure, and such. Alan Bates is the best thing about the movie as the Rose's ruthless manager, and Harry Dean Stanton and Frederic Forrest add some interesting seasoning. But as a whole, the film can't rise above its mixed purposes or clichés. --Tom Keogh

  • The Debt Collector [1999]The Debt Collector | DVD | (07/06/2004) from £6.57   |  Saving you £-0.58 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Billy Connolly has made the transition from comedy to straight dramatic roles with a great deal more success than most. In The Debt Collector he plays Nicky Dryden, a violent debt collector who has served 18 grim years in prison, only to have found rehabilitation on the outside as a successful sculptor and respectability in marriage to Francesca Annis. However, Keltie (Ken Stott) the policeman who originally arrested him is disgusted at this ex-con's social elevation and undertakes an obsessive campaign of stalking and harassment, refusing to allow him to bury his past. It is Keltie, in a sense, who is the true debt collector of the title--he doesn't believe Dryden either has or ever can repay society. Furthermore, Dryden is idolised by a young thug (Iain Robertson) who bases his psychotic lifestyle on Dryden's past exploits. Stott and Connolly make excellent, craggy adversaries, with the frustrated, embittered ex-cop cutting a menacing, though at times pathetic character, while Connolly's Dryden knows that his past, violent side is capable of erupting at any time. This gloomily compelling drama has moments of sickeningly concussive impact as it winds its way down to its tragic conclusion. Annette Crosbie as Keltie's vulnerable yet curiously strong Mother, turns in a fine supporting performance. --David Stubbs
