Sarah Brightman performs a selection of timeless classics with the English National Orchestra at London's Royal Albert Hall where she was filmed in concert in September 1997 for her first solo release on video. The concert includes a live performance of the international hit duet ""Time To Say Goodbye"" with Andrea Bocelli and a guest appearance by Andrew Lloyd Webber on ""Whistle Down The Wind"". Featuring: 1. Overture: Capriccio Espagnol/Scena Y Canto Gitano/ Fandango Asturiano 2.
In 1998, a concert celebrated Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday at the Royal Albert Hall. It featured more than two hours of hits from a body of work spanning almost three decades. In this record of a memorable night, star after star steps onto a massive, Eurovision-style set to revisit golden moments in their long association with Britain's most successful composer of musicals. Elaine Paige in big frocks and even bigger voice delivers "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" and "Memory" with her usual power; Michael Ball and Donny Osmond stretch the last vestiges of boyish charm to the very limits but still sound great; and Boyzone get the youth vote. Then there are Kiri te Kanawa, Bonnie Tyler, Tina Arena and of course, another encore for Julian Lloyd Webber and those Variations on the cello. But the stars are Sir Andrew's ex-wife Sarah Brightman in an outstanding selection from The Phantom of the Opera (probably his best work), Antonio Banderos who really can sing, and Glenn Close, a stupendous, moving Norma Desmond in songs from Sunset Boulevard. All in all, a deserved celebration for someone who has given so many people a great deal of pleasure, and a treat for musicals fans of all ages. --Piers Ford
Opulently blood-spattered sci-fi gothic rock opera. In the near future humankind is suffering a worldwide epidemic of organ failures. In the midst of the crisis a multinational biotech corporation called GeneCo launches a finance programme for organ transplants. But there's a catch: those who miss their monthly payments are hunted down and 'repossessed' by the dreaded Repo Men who are out to retrieve their property as quickly - and as painfully - as they can. Alexa Vega stars as Shilo Wallace an over-protected young girl seeking answers to her own rare disease and her family's mysterious history. Will her questions finally be answered at the eagerly-anticipated flamboyantly spectacular Genetic Opera? Paul Sorvino and Paris Hilton co-star.
By fusing Rocky Horror Picture Show and Blade Runner this futuristic tale of horror modernizes the rock opera genre with original music and rich dark production design.
Adam (Richard E. Grant) is a rich industrialist and frustrated opera singer aspiring to a more cultured world. Spurred on by playful jibes that he's just a City suit living a capitalist dream he decides to stage an opera in his lavish country retreat. He feels sure the shallow taunting will end once his friends see him in full voice. In fact his singing might even help him win the hand of Celia (Sarah Brightman) the female conductor he's been pursuing, especially since she is the first to be recruited for his showpiece.
Part concert, part documentary, part travelogue, this video hit duplicates the success of Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli's albums and underscores his unique crossover appeal. Critical response to Bocelli has been confined to fusillades of scorn from classical and opera writers, but the bullet-proof superstar is better understood in the context of a mainland European tradition of pop-classical fusion. Bocelli cheerfully ignores the supposed wall between high (classical) art and low (pop) kitsch with his mix of operatic chestnuts, soft pop and traditional Italian songs.Indeed, despite interview segments in which he proclaims his love of opera or proudly recalls an apprenticeship to operatic veteran Franco Corelli, Bocelli comes across as more fan than virtuoso. But if his voice can prompt technical cavils from hard-core opera buffs, the blind singer's emotional directness and relative lack of onstage preening explain much of his populist appeal. Featured songs include warhorse arias, leading off with the "Louie, Louie" of tenor showpieces, Turandot's "Nessun Dorma" and duets with gruff Italian pop-rocker Zucchero and sopranos Nuccia Focile and Sarah Brightman (who buddies up for the tear-jerking closer, "Time to Say Goodbye"). Even with the marquee bonus of those guests, however, A Night in Tuscany gets its biggest boost from the seductive Italian countryside, prominently featured in between-song segments, and in the romantic concert setting, Pisa's Piazza dei Cavalieri. --Sam Sutherland

As a performer, Sarah Brightman has never sought the comfort of the pigeonhole. In a career now well into its third decade, she's danced with Hot Gossip, been a teenage pop star, developed into a seasoned West End and Broadway musical star, and extended the range of her pure, classically trained soprano voice for the opera stage and concert platform. British critics, unable to pin down an obvious but diverse talent tend to dismiss her as the flaky ex-wife of Andrew Lloyd Webber and leave it at that. But as this 1999 South African concert shows, she's a megastar beyond her own homeland. Brightman is a guileless artist with eclectic tastes, from Queen to Puccini and Morricone. She remains loyal to her former husband's work and is at her best in the numbers from Phantom of the Opera. In other hands some stuff could be overripe: an Italian version of "My Heart Will Go On", and the ubiquitous "Nessun Dorma", for example. But her sincerity and soaring voice carry it all off. And Brightman proves herself a thoroughbred live singer, knocking today's manufactured pop babes into a cocked hat. The programme also includes an interview with the singer. --Piers Ford
