Matt Dillon (Crash) and Sean Young (Blade Runner) lead an all-star cast in James Dearden's visceral tale of lust and treachery. Dillion stars as Jonathan Corllis, a handsome, sinister student from Philadelphia. Hungry for money and status, Jonathan begins a secret relationship with Dorothy (Sean Young), the daughter of a wealthy business magnate (Max von Sydow The Exorcist, Shutter Island). Dorothy falls pregnant and confides in Jonathan, telling him that her father will likely cut off her inheritance when he finds out. In a blind rage, Jonathan murders Dorothy and masks her death as a suicide. The killer moves to New York City, and a twist of fate he meets with Dorothy's twin sister, Ellen. Driven by greed, Jonathan sets out to seduce her. When Ellen slowly begins to harbour suspicions about her sister's death, a string of killings unfolds an unthinkable truth. Also stars Golden Globe winner Diane Ladd (Alice).
The sixth series of The X-Files picks up after the events of the big-screen movie. So it is that "The Beginning" attempts to fit the film into the TV chronology before moving on to tackle plot points left dangling from series five's "The End" (note the guard asleep at the nuclear power plant console is named Homer!). Between story arc threads are several pleasing one-off excursions: time travel to a Bermuda Triangle boatload of Nazis ("Triangle"); further temporal escapades akin to Groundhog Day ("Monday"); a demonic baby case featuring genre stalwart Bruce Campbell ("Terms of Endearment"); and "The Dreamland, Parts 1 and 2", in which David Duchovny gets to play someone else via personality switching. Back in the conspiracy scheme of things, Mulder chases "S.R. 819", a Senate resolution tying conspiracies together; "Two Fathers" and "One Son" indicates that the abductee experiments are intended to cure the black oil disease; and the year finishes with "BioGenesis", in which a beach-buried UFO has Scully and the audience wondering if we are from Mars. --Paul Tonks

The New Adventures of Pinocchio is the charming sequel to the 1996 live-action movie. With a largely brand-new cast, the most important returning actor is Martin Landau as Geppetto. His role is pared down, however, by a neat twist in the tale. Udo Kier is the other returning actor, this time in the new bad guy/girl role of Madame Flambeau, whose carnival sets itself up in Pinocchio's town and offers everyone a miracle elixir to change their lives. Pinocchio (now played as a real boy by Gabriel Thomson) hopes the elixir will make his papa feel better from a nasty cold, but it turns out Flambeau tricked him with puppet-making juice. So now it's Geppetto who's the wooden star of the show! Lots of surprises keep the story happily moving along, with secret identities waiting to spring from the likes of Warwick Davis as the ringleader Dwarf. The Jim Henson Studio puppets are first class as always, with some flawless computer graphics coming to the rescue every so often. There's a beautiful backdrop of Luxembourg countryside too for this pantomime where everyone looks as if they had great fun putting it together. --Paul Tonks
