| RRP For the time, there had never been a more lavishly produced science fiction TV series than Space: 1999, which was British-made on a first-season budget of 3.25 million pounds, an astounding amount, and ran for two seasons from 1975-77. What keeps fans enthralled after all these years has only partly to do with the first-rate production values, the plausibly constructed spaceship models and expert special effects. The tone of the show is one of scientific dispassion, setting it apart from its TV SF predecessors such as Star Trek in which the mood is more generally convivial. Our heroes here are in dire circumstances that require cool heads as a survival trait. The moon and the 311 crew members of Moonbase Alpha experience a cataclysm that causes the moon to break away from Earth's orbit and travel endlessly through space, making our heroes into unintentional explorers. No TV series has created a more palpable feel of hard science fiction than this. Of course the show is not without its detractors, and has been soundly lambasted for its many scientific errors. No less august a figure than Isaac Asimov criticized the show for its premise in the opening episode "Breakaway," which had nuclear explosions on the "dark side of the moon" somehow propelling it out of Earth's orbit and flying through space without regard to any physical laws. In "Earthbound," aliens travelling to Earth state it will take them 75 years to reach their destination, making one wonder why it didn't take the moon that long to encounter the aliens. While these are serious complaints, fans tend to remember the scientific seriousness of the series and the sense of awe created by the many strange creatures and phenomena they encounter on their journey through the Galaxy. --Jim Gay, Amazon.com

The Tribe - Vols. 1 And 2 | DVD | (25/03/2002)

| RRP Lets admit it right away, The Tribe may just be the best kids TV show ever. To be precise, its for older children and teenagers (and their parents will find it insightful, too), the very age group that occupies all the roles in this post-apocalyptic tale. Mixing the scenario of Lord of the Flies (except there are, yknow, girls in it as well) with the visual imagery of Mad Max and the angst-ridden psychodrama of Sweet Valley High, The Tribe tells of a near-future in which the worlds adult population has been wiped out by a virus. Of course, societys infrastructure has gone, too, so the youthful survivors not only have to deal with all the usual trials and tribulations of childhood and adolescence but must also develop some form of functioning society of their own, without any form of adult intervention and with only the barest amount of technology. What happens, of course, is that all the social ills of the old world, from bullying to teenage pregnancy, are writ 10 times larger in the new. The ways in which the characters cope (or fail to cope) with these issues are both exasperating and deeply moving. --Roger Thomas

I Spit On Your Grave 1979: Originally titled 'Day of the Woman' I Spit on Your Grave has gained a reputation as an extremely graphic and violent film as well as the most talked about film in cinema history! It tells the story of Jennifer Hills (Camille Keaton) a magazine writer from New York who retires to a secluded cabin in the woods to write her first novel. There she is brutally assaulted raped and left for dead by four country boys. But Jennifer is alive. Emotionally destroyed she finds herself choreographing a horrific revenge scheme to inflict punishment on her four assailants in methods that defy the imagination. Banned by censors and bashed by critics the legacy of I Spit on Your Grave goes on as the most disturbing film ever created. Yet it has become a cult classic of epic proportion!

Dudley Do-Right | DVD | (12/03/2001)
from £21.38

| RRP In this awkward live-action version of the classic cartoon Dudley Do-Right, the considerable charm Brendan Fraser displayed in George of the Jungle and The Mummy is much needed. The first half of the movie lays out the basic elements of the cartoon (none-too-bright Canadian Mountie battles melodramatic villain Snidely Whiplash with pluck and dumb luck) with little wit or imagination, but lots of pratfalls and broad gags. But about halfway into it, when Whiplash has taken over the town of Semi-Happy Falls and become its leading citizen, the movie takes a curious turn: since Whiplash has become, to all appearances, a good guy, Dudley decides the only way to fight him is to turn into a bad guy. Next thing you know, Dudley is decked out in black leather and cruising around on a motorbike while Whiplash fumes impotently. Fans who are familiar with the original US TV series Bullwinkle from which Dudley originated may decry this departure, but it gives the movie a much-needed burst of energy and the opportunity for some entertainingly surreal images--like Whiplash up to his neck in a mud bath with cucumber slices on his eyes, consulting with his henchmen about dealing with that unpredictable Do-Right. The film also features Alfred Molina, Sarah Jessica Parker and Monty Python's Eric Idle. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com
