Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Series 4 (Standard plastic case packaging) | DVD | (01/06/2004)
from £14.99
| Saving you £20.00 (133.42%)
| RRP In its fourth series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer had to change its formula radically. Two major characters--the vampire-with-a-soul Angel and Cordelia, the queen bitch of Sunnydale High--had gone off to be in their own show, Angel, and soon after the start of the year Willow's werewolf boyfriend Oz left when Seth Green needed to concentrate on his film career. Buffy and Willow started college, where they met new characters such as Riley, the All-American Boy with a double life, and Tara, the sweet stuttering witch; but Xander and Giles found themselves at something of a loose end. Several characters were subjected to the radical re-envisioning possible in a show that deals with the supernatural: the blond vampire Spike came back and soon found himself with an inhibitor chip in his head, forced into reluctant alliance with Buffy; the former vengeance demon Anya became passionately smitten with Xander. Not all fans were happy with the central story arc about the sinister Dr Walsh (Lindsay Crouse) and her Frankensteinian creation Adam, though Crouse's performance was memorable. The strength of Series 4 was perhaps most in impressive stand-alone episodes such as the silent "Hush", the multiple dream sequence "Restless" and the passionate, moving "New Moon Rising", in which Oz returns, apparently cured, only to find that Willow is no longer waiting for him. This was one of the high points of the show as a vehicle for intense acting, perhaps only equalled by "Who Are You?", in which the evil slayer Faith takes over Buffy's body and Sarah Michelle Gellar gets to play the bad girl for once. --Roz Kaveney

Ram Teri Ganga Maili | DVD | (07/05/2001)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Raj Kapoor's Ram Teri Ganga Maili is a love story on two levels: the love for the Ganga, the great Indian river that symbolises India's purity and natural goodness, and the love of a girl called Ganga (Mandakini), who is the personification of the river. The film was made at a time when India was embroiled in a battle with a corrupt political system and a morally decadent society and therefore it had a significant message to deliver: that love and goodness will prevail no matter what the challenge. The film tells the story of Narendra (Rajeev Kapoor) who, fed up with the dirty political schemes run by his father, escapes to Gangotri, the origin of the river Ganga. There he falls in love with and marries the girl Ganga, whose simple purity contrasts with the ugliness of his past. Faced by a tragedy on his return home, Narendra is unable to keep his promise to bring Ganga back and she is left to find her own way to him. The film traces Ganga's journey to Narendra drawing parallels between the violations she experiences on her way and the abuse of the river Ganga brought on by a degenerate population driven by their own selfish needs. On the DVD: Ram Teri Ganga Maili on disc is digitally remastered from the original film and presented in 5.1 Dolby Digital sound. The special features include an exclusive interview with Rajeev Kapoor by director Dharmesh Darshan. --Anika Puri

Whatever Happened To Aunt Alice? | DVD | (02/07/2001)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice? sees a change of direction for Robert Aldrich's unofficial trilogy which all involve "ageing actresses" in macabre thrillers (What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? and Hush ... Hush, Sweet Charlotte). The busy Aldrich only produced What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice?, calling in TV director Lee H Katzin (a Mission: Impossible regular) to handle the megaphone. Aldrich also opted to shoot the film in pastel colours appropriate to the unusual Arizona desert setting rather than the gothic black and white of the earlier films. The film cast the less iconic Geraldine Page as the genteelly unpleasant Mrs Clare Marrable. Left apparently penniless by her departed husband, Mrs M opts to keep up appearances by hiring a succession of timid elderly housekeepers, bossing them around with well-spoken nastiness, duping them out of their life savings and, on the pretence of getting help with a midnight tree-planting program, lures them into their own graves, batters them to death and plants lovely pines over them. Page gets her own way with the meek likes of Mildred Dunnock, until the feistier, red-wigged R!uth Gordon applies for the job and gets down to amateur sleuthing. While Bette Davis and her partners went wildly over the top in previous films, Page and Gordon play more subtly, finding odd pathetic moments in between the monstrous, irony-laced horror stuff. The supporting cast of pretty or handsome young things, mostly putty in the hands of the manipulative Page, contribute striking little cameos (Rosemary Forsyth sports a pleasing 1969 hairdo as the kindly but intimidated neighbour), but the film belongs to its leading ladies, delivering a fine line in twist-packed cat-and-mouse theatrics. The video is handsomely letterboxed, as befits a film made before widescreen films were shot with all the action in the middle of the frame to facilitate television sales. --Kim Newman
