The first of the horror films producer VAL LEWTON (The Body Snatcher, I Walked with a Zombie) made for RKO Pictures redefined the genre by leaving its most frightening terrors to its audience's imagination. SIMONE SIMON (La bête humaine) stars as a Serbian émigré in Manhattan who believes that, because of an ancient curse, any physical intimacy with the man she loves (KENT SMITH) will turn her into a feline predator. Lewton, a consummate producer-auteur who oversaw every aspect of his projects, found an ideal director in JACQUES TOURNEUR (Out of the Past), a chiaroscuro stylist adept at keeping viewers off-kilter with startling compositions and psychological innuendo. Together, they eschewed the canned effects of earlier monster movies in favour of shocking with subtle shadows and creative audio cues. One of the studio's most successful movies of the 1940s, Cat People raised the creature feature to new heights of sophistication and mystery. Le Plaisir based on the stories of Guy du Maupassant takes a gently wistful approach to the subject of love and desire through its three tales. Le Masque is the melancholy story of an old man as a veritable dancing wax museum figure hopelessly grasping for his lost youth in a nightly masquerade. La Maison Tellier ""a fairy tale for adults "" in the words of the narrator (Jean Servais playing Maupassant) is a delightful tale of a local brothel that closes for a night for a visit to the country where the ladies have gone to celebrate a young girl's first communion. Jean Gabin is delightful as the charming country bumpkin who plays host to the troupe and becomes sweetly smitten with flirty Danielle Darrieux. The finale Le Modele stars Daniel Glin and Simone Simon as young lovers whose imminent breakup heads toward tragedy but takes a fateful turn both sad and sweet. Le Plaisir is a delicate portrait of love and desire. A favourite film of Jean-Luc Godard who called it ""the greatest film made in France since the liberation"".

When the devil incarnate Mr. Scratch (Walter Huston) comes a-calling, Stone begins to have second thoughts, enlisting famed orator and folk hero Daniel Webster (Edward Arnold) to fight what becomes a case of life and death. Also featuring pop sensation Dennis Lotis and singer (and future Oliver! Star) Shani Wallis in a very early film role The Extra Day is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. At the end of the final day of filming one of the studio drivers loses the last can of film. The producer orders his assistant Joe Blake to track down all five extras involved in the last scene ensuring they are available the following morning for retakes. Joe knows them all: Steven Marlow ex-Commando officer; Barney West a broken-down prize fighter; Mr and Mrs Bliss now retiring after 40 years in the profession; and Toni Howard a Society girl bored with Society. Visiting each in turn he has a glimpse into their various private lives and fines comedy drama and tragedy.
