In 1974, Stephen King published his first novel, the story of Carrie White, a troubled young girl, bullied by her peers and daughter to a fanatical fundamentalist mother, who discovers she has telekinetic powers. In 1976, it became the first of his works to be adapted for the big screen and, to this day, remains one of the very best. Carrie marked Brian De Palma's arrival as a major director, following smaller cult films such as Sisters, Phantom of the Paradise and Obsession, and provided a key early role for Sissy Spacek (Badlands), one that would earn her a Best Actress nomination at the Academy Awards. Piper Laurie would also pick up a nomination, for Best Supporting Actress, as Carrie's mother, while future stars such as Amy Irving, John Travolta and Nancy Allen were give their first major parts in a big-screen production. Not a John F Kennedy biopic, but a film of New Orleans' attorney Jim Garrison's investigation into the President's assassination, JFK is that rarest of things, a modern Hollywood drama which credits the audience with serious intelligence and ultimately proves itself a great film. Oliver Stone's film has the archetypal story, visual scale and substance to match; not just a gripping real-life conspiracy thriller, but a fable for the fall of the American dream (a theme further explored by the director in Nixon and Any Given Sunday). JFK doesn't reveal exactly what happened in Dallas on 22 November 1963--those who knew generally took their secrets to the grave--but marshals a vast wealth of facts and plausible theories, trusting the audience to draw its own conclusions. Following less than a year after Dances With Wolves (1990), these two epics mark the high point of Kevin Costner's career and the vast supporting cast here, including Gary Oldman, Kevin Bacon, Sissy Spacek and Donald Sutherland, is superb. Quite simply the best American political film ever made. --Gary S Dalkin

That is until he discovers that she's his number one fan and has no intention of ever letting him go... The Dark Half (Dir. George A. Romero 1993): Masters of horror Stephen King and George A. Romero have created a gripping creepy frightening film that thrills shocks and works us over! Featuring an intelligent screenplay and first-rate cast including Oscar winner Timothy Hutton The Dark Half will keep you captivated to the chilling end. Horror writer Thad Beaumont (Hutton) hopes to distance himself from his murder novels and from George Stark the pseudonym he has used to author them. To achieve this he cooks up a murder of his own: a publicity stunt that should lay Stark to rest forever. But when the people around him are found gruesomely slain - and his own fingerprints dot the crime scenes - Beaumont is dumbfounded until he learns that Stark has taken on a life of his own and begun a gruesome quest for vengeance... Carrie (Dir. Brian De Palma 1976): Based on the novel by Stephen King with a screenplay by Lawrence D. Cohen Carrie is the story of a young girl with telekinesis who has the power to move objects by the force of her mind. The school wallflower and the brunt of her classmates' jokes Carrie's revenge is the focus of this tense and stylish horror film. This is the film that made Sissy Spacek a star and featured John Travolta and Amy Irving in their first important screen roles.
