  Poulenc's late pious works for voice share the sprightliness of his early secular orchestral and chamber pieces; this is perhaps especially true of his 1952 work of devotion and martyrdom. Young aristocrat Blanche seeks refuge in the cloister from her fear of death only to find the Carmelites she joins the object of persecution by the Jacobin Revolution; she flees, but then comes back to share her sisters' death--a powerful scene in which a hymn is stripped down a voice at a time, and finally silenced when Blanche joins them on the guillotine. Anne Sophie Schmidt as Blanche is convincing both in her terror and her resignation; Patricia Petibon is delightful as her closest friend, the lively young nun Constance to whom fear is never especially an issue and who has sought death cheerfully from the start, praying that the dying Prioress might be saved and she taken in her place. The older women--the two Prioresses and Mere Marie who persuades the nuns to refuse compromise--are equally fine in their graver music. --Roz Kaveney

  Maurice Pialat's Police delivers on the raw promise of its title insofar as much of its action qualifies as an insistently 'procedural' descent into the Paris drugs underworld. But the hyper real route that the film takes to arrive there before veering into a zone of dangerous emotional play contributes to a disorienting adventurous and ultimately tremendously exciting experience unlike any 'police-thriller' ever before conceived. The iconic G''rard Depardieu (who also collaborated with Pialat on Loulou Sous le soleil de Satan and Le Gar''u) plays Mangin a cop whose brutal method of investigation finds its obsessive outlet in an attempt to crack a Tunisian narcotics ring. It is when Mangin enters into close acquaintance with the defiant Noria (expertly played by Sophie Marceau in one of her first screen roles) that the film proceeds to chart an unexpected emotionally ambiguous course - and the lines between 'right' and 'wrong' and 'power' and 'freedom' terminally blur. Written with Catherine Breillat (director of The Last Mistress Anatomy of Hell Fat Girl) but relying in equal measure upon Pialat's improvisatory control (directing among others his star-actress from A nos amours Sandrine Bonnaire) Police is a genre-defying excursion rivaled only by John Cassavetes' The Killing of a Chinese Bookie in the pantheon of cinema's most idiosyncratic thrillers.

  The Doctors: 30 Years of Time Travel and Beyond is a Doctor Who documentary directed by Bill Baggs, the independent producer behind Who-related video series Auton (1997-9), P.R.O.B.E. (1995-6) and The Stranger (1992-5). Amateurish production values include captions being cropped at the sides of the screen and microphones wandering fully into shot. But it's worth putting up with these for the many interviews, including those with Jon Pertwee, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. The highlight among the ex-Doctors being Peter Davidson talking in very good humour with Mark Strickson (Turlough). Other interviewees include Wendy Padbury (Zoe), Nicholas Courtney (The Brigadier), Caroline John (Liz Shaw), Louise Jameson (Leela) and Sophie Aldred (Ace) reminiscing affectionately with McCoy at one of the locations for their Who adventure "Survival" (1989). Also offering their views are producers Philip Hinchcliffe (1974-7) and John Nathan-Turner (1980-9), director David Moloney, Shaun Sutton of BBC Drama, writers Pip and Jane Baker and various others. Included are some previously unpublished stills and colour location filming footage from "The Smugglers" (1966), "The Abdominal Snowman" (1967), "The Daemons" (1971) and "Shada" (1979). Covering the entire 26-year history of Doctor Who in 66 minutes means this is far from comprehensive, but for fans it is fascinating stuff elevated by the genuine love almost everyone involved clearly feels for the show. On the DVD: The Doctors: 30 Years of Time Travel and Beyond has production values far removed from the exceptionally well presented official BBC Doctor Who titles. The only extra is 12 minutes of silent colour location filming footage of very variable quality, selections from which are included in the main programme. In the documentary itself the sound is perfectly acceptable mono. Unfortunately the picture appears to have been transferred from a damaged video master and there is an almost constant horizontal tearing across the centre of the screen, varying from slight but noticeable to so extreme it makes the feature all but unwatchable. The packaging incorrectly names the director as Bill Braggs and describes the programme as giving an insight into "the design of the Ice Warrior and Cybermen models" featured in the last series.   Micawber was ITV's big weapon in the Christmas 2001 television ratings war. With its gritty recreation of Dickensian London and David Jason--a name guaranteed to attract viewers regardless of the programme--in the title role it certainly had all the hallmarks of blockbusting television drama. Jason is certainly a fine Micawber, wringing every ounce of pathos and relentless optimism from one of Dickens' most well loved characters. And he is ably abetted by Annabelle Apsion as his put-upon wife who stands by him through thick and thin and who "never will desert him". The trouble is that if you're going to lift a familiar fictional character out of his original context and give him a whole new life and set of adventures, they really have to match or improve on the original. And Micawber has already been through so much during the course of David Copperfield that stretching him across four episodes and a plot which can only really offer a series of variations on the original theme doesn't give much room for development or dramatic impact. In the writer's corner, Jason's long-term collaborator John Sullivan (creator of Only Fools and Horses) makes a valiant attempt to generate some authentic Dickensian atmosphere. Touches of authentic Victoriana abound in the backstage theatre scenes, a dancing bear, the pawn shop and the highly imaginative flashbacks to the source of Micawber's straightened state. The script tends to combine gritty costume drama with modern comedy in an occasionally uneasy mixture; sometimes we see the ghosts of Del Boy or Pa Larkin rather than Dickens' hapless, pathetic but great-hearted victim of circumstance. But fans of Jason won't complain and there's enough soul in the story to make it compelling. --Piers Ford
