Like It Is | DVD | (11/09/2000)
from £12.70

| RRP Like It Is is much like watching a train wreck--the very idea of it is repellent and yet you perversely can't avert your eyes. While its urban grittiness and sooty veneer entranced some critics who mistook its violent, netherworld neorealism for art, Like It Is offers little in the way of redemption, positive gay imaging or even particularly good narrative. Paul Oremland directed this venture about a young, gay Blackpool tough named Craig (Steve Bell) who bare-knuckle boxes for money. He ultimately moves to London in search of a better life and falls in with the trendy London gay-club scene, meeting and falling for a handsome record producer named Matt (Ian Rose) and his wealthy boss (played by the Who's lead singer Roger Daltrey). The better life is quickly tainted by disillusion and misery, much as is the viewing experience. Steve Bell is, in real life, a featherweight boxing champion in Britain and therefore brings an urgent and raw vitality to the lead, but the characters as a whole are either irritating or unsympathetic, and it's ultimately difficult to find anyone to care for, or a story worth empathising with. --Paula Nechak, Amazon.com

Immortals (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + Digital Copy) | Blu Ray | (05/03/2012)
from £29.68
| Saving you £0.31 (1.00%)
| RRP Director Tarsem Singh never, ever, shortchanges you on his visuals. Presented in razor-sharp 1080p, and in 3D too, Immortals is a busy, dramatic and sparkling home cinema demonstration. It hardly skimps on the action, either. Said action kicks off as Mickey Rourkes King Hyperion amasses an army, with the intention of waging war on humankind. This he does quite successfully, until the small matter of Henry Cavills Theseus interjects. It turns out that Theseus has been chosen by Zeus to do battle with Hyperion, and thats pretty much all you need to know, before settling down to a couple of hours of medieval fantasy battling. Anyone familiar with 300 will know the score here. Story isnt Immortals strength, instead giving way to wave after wave of blockbuster carnage. Theres some terrific CG work at play here, too, that makes good use of 3D. And rarely isnt something of note happening on the screen. The extra features are good, with the Blu-ray boasting a pair of alternative endings, along with a different opening too. The ones chosen for the final cut edge them out, but its interesting to see what else was considered. Theres some more traditional deleted material, too, and some welcome insights courtesy of the behind the scenes footage. It all rounds off a strong package, for a relentlessly entertaining film, warts and all. --Jon Foster

One Love - The Bob Marley All Star Tribute | DVD | (12/06/2000)
from £7.38
| Saving you £5.61 (76.02%)
| RRP Conceived with DVD release in mind, this high-end, live video concert taped in Jamaica lives up to its title with a generous repertoire of Bob Marley songs performed by reverent pop, hip-hop, rock and reggae veterans. Shot on a rainy night in December 1999, the home video version expands upon an inaugural TNT cable telecast with an additional hour of performances. The DVD edition adds a premium level of special features and exclusive content. The music's the main thing, of course, and on that front One Love is uniformly respectful, orbiting around Marley's songs and infused with whiffs of his Rastafarian world view and reggae's broader Third World perspectives. Marley's family members serve as hosts and frequent collaborators, with a limber house band further reinforcing a coherent, communal element to the performances, and the titular all-stars immerse themselves in Marley's world. Lauryn Hill opens the concert with what is clearly one of its highest points, a joyful "Turn the Lights Down Low". Chrissie Hynde and Erykah Badu take turns duetting with Jimmy Cliff, and another reggae titan, Toots Hibbert, proves a perfect, ebullient fit with a current line-up of the Wailers. The celebrity choices include a conspicuous subset of American folk-rockers in Tracy Chapman, Ben Harper and Hootie and the Blowfish's Darius Rucker, with Chapman the most convincing in a glowing version of "Three Little Birds".Avid reggae fans may be mildly frustrated by the overall crossover thrust of this homage, which favours Yankee rap and hip-hop (via Busta Rhymes and Queen Latifah) instead of home-grown dancehall; it tantalises us with glimpses of Marley's peers, like Cliff and Hibbert, while being largely occupied with sustaining its parade of non-reggae marquee names. For most viewers, though, the scope of the concert and the first-rate sonic finish will sustain the spell, an effect powerfully expanded on the superb DVD version. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com
