Kev watches too much television, the Idiot Boxof the title. An unemployed hooligan, he wants there to be something in his life apart from vandalism, drink and perfunctory sex. He rages against dogs and people who are as rude to him as he is to everybody--anger is who he is. His best friend Mick is even more bad natured, and between them they concoct a doomed bank-robbery. Kev beats up the police informer who sells him the guns; the police are watching the bank, waiting for it to be attacked by an entirely different bank robber; and their stolen getaway car is reclaimed by its owner. Often very funny, Idiot Box is a terrifying film about the stuntedness of young male Australian working class lives. Ben Mendelsohn and Jeremy Sims bring pathos and wit to their portrayals of Kev and Mick, while also making it clear that these are not young men you would wish to meet or fall out with. David Caesar's deliberately jagged directorial style echoes the adrenalin-driven lives of his protagonists and keeps us constantly on edge as he cuts between story lines. --Roz Kaveney

Featuring Shelley Winters as the rifle's only rival for McAdam's interest and Tony Curtis in one of his first screen performances the gripping tale of the men (and gun) who won the West is one of Stewart's most memorable films and one of the genre's most enduring classics.ShenandoahWith the integrity and depth of an epic Shenandoah tells the dramatic story of a man caught in a dilemma. The film opens with the Procession of the Sardar by Ippolitov-Ivanov with pictures of lakes and mountains in Uzbeksitan. Lyadovs charming Russian Folksongs begins east of Moscow in Suzdal, in the 13th-century cathedral. Rubinsteins Dance of the Bayaderes No. 2 takes us to Yalta, the lake resort where Chekov recovered from tuberculosis. A Galop by Kabalevsky underscores pedestrians running up and down the Potemkin steps in Odessa; while Mussorgsky accompanies scenes of the rich farm land round Kiev, Uzbekistan and oases on the silk-road to Samarkand. Lyadovs Baba Yaga is set in woods round St Petersburg, evoking the witch of Russian folk lore, and Kilimora, set in the same location, depicts a snowy landscape. The Enchanted Lake shows the Valday Heights, where the Volga rises. All these pieces are well played by the Slovak Philharmonic, following one another with very short breaks. Alferd Packer was the only man in the United States ever convicted of cannibalism--what better hero for fellow Coloradan and future South Park creator Trey Parker to celebrate in music? Blue-eyed and boyish Parker was still in college when he wrote, directed, composed the songs for and took the starring role as the innocent young Packer in this film, giving a gee-whiz performance as an ambitious pioneer who joins an ill-fated trek west that ends up stranded in the mountains. At times resembling a perverse community theatre parody of Rodgers and Hammerstein ("My heart's as full as a baked po-ta-to!"), Parker bounces back and forth between cheery production numbers and goony songs ("Let's build a snowman", sings one starving-mad hiker) and grotesque gore (bloody body parts, festering sores, human hors d'oeuvres). It lacks in style and consistency and the juvenile gags and fart jokes wear thin over the course of a feature film, but Parker's sheer energy and inventiveness carry the overlong picture to a rousing conclusion. Regular Parker collaborators Matt Stone and Dian Bachar co-star in this tuneful barbecue. --Sean Axmaker
