  • King Arthur [UMD Universal Media Disc]King Arthur | UMD | (05/09/2005) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £18.99

It's got a round table, some knights, and a noble warrior who rises to become King Arthur, but everything else about this revisionist legend is pure Hollywood. That's not such a bad thing if you enjoyed Rob Roy, Braveheart, Gladiator and Troy, and there's some intriguing potential in presenting the "real" Arthur (played by Clive Owen) as a 5th-century soldier of Rome, assigned to defend Roman-imperial England against a hoard of invading Saxons (led by Stellan Skarsgard in hairy villain mode). As revamped history and "archaeological findings" would have us believe, Guinevere (Keira Knightley) is a warrior babe in face-paint and Lancelot (Ioan Gruffudd) is a nonentity who fades into the woodwork. Never mind. Best to enjoy the harsh, gloomy atmosphere of Irish locations, the ruggedness of Owen and his hearty supporting cast, and the entertaining nonsense of a Jerry Bruckheimer production that strips battle-ready Guinevere down to leather-strap S&M gear while all the men sport full-body armor. Hail to the queen, indeed! --Jeff Shannon

Beethoven is back and he's about to get his big Hollywood break and perhaps find a new family in the process. Lizard trainer Eddie (Jonathan Silverman) has a very no-nonsense attitude toward animals: they are a business investment, not pets. Eddie's son Billie (Hannah Montana's Moises Arias) yearns for a dog of his own, but his father refuses to bend his no-pets policy, even when Billie rescues a huge St. Bernard from the city streets. Billie quickly dubs the dog Beethoven due to the dog's fascination with a televised concert of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and Eddie grudgingly agrees to let Beethoven spend one night at the house. When a movie-star dog is dognapped, Eddie is fired, but in a fluke is hired as head animal trainer when the film's director, Stanley (Eddie Griffin), and producer Patricia (Cheers' Rhea Perlman) choose Beethoven to replace Frizzy in the film. As Beethoven worms his way into the home and hearts of Eddie and Billie, show writer Lisa (Jennifer Finnigan) starts hanging out at their house to rewrite the show and Billie and Eddie have never been happier in their lives. When Beethoven is dognapped, Eddie, Billie, and Lisa learn a lot about themselves, what comprises a family, and what's really important in life as they battle to save Beethoven. This film is full of hilarious escapades by the lovable, overly exuberant Beethoven and is appealing to the entire family despite its PG rating for some mild rude humour. --Tami Horiuchi

But the war had already started in Japan for James Condon American journalist and editor of the Japanese Chronicle whose intuition had led him to believe that major trouble was brewing. The role of Condon man of hard words and harder fists is just the kind of tough guy that first brought James Cagney stardom and in this movie you will not be disappointed as he battles to stay alive long enough to warn the rest of the world against a Japanese militarist plot called the 'Tanaka Plan' that has world domination as its objective. This is one of the first American martial arts movies and features some gripping action with Cagney doing his own stunts for which he trained intensively with Ken Kuniyuki a fifth degree judo master before shooting. This is Cagney at his best.
