  • Guardian [2000]Guardian | DVD | (17/09/2001) from £5.91   |  Saving you £13.07 (447.60%)   |  RRP £15.99

Though the Guardian opens with a nod or two to Three Kings, it really offers a cut-down version of Fallen, with Los Angeles Detective Kross (Mario Van Peebles) facing Telal--a body-hopping Sumerian demon he encountered at an archaeological site in Iraq during the Gulf War--entrusted by ritual scarification with the task of protecting a 12-year-old boy who will grow up to unite the three great monotheistic faiths (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) and thus set the Devil's work back millennia. A sub-plot deals with a red powder drug ("Chaos"), imported by the demon's minions, which catches on in LA sending coke-sniffing agents into murderous frenzies (the funniest scene) and briefly giving guest star dealer Ice-T superpowers until an ambiguously angelic hit lady (Stacy Oversier) tosses him off a building. There are elements of The Matrix stirred in, with Oversier and Telal dead ringers for the Carrie-Ann Moss and Hugo Weaving characters, but it inevitably boils down to a Fallen-style formula. It's stripped-down demonology--ever since The Evil Dead, those Sumerian demons have been getting a bad press--with direct-to-video action, but is by no means unlikeable. On the DVD: Along with the trailer, this disc offers IMDB filmographies for Van Peebles, Remar, Ice-T and John Terlesky (who used to be a busy B-actor in the likes of Chopping Mall and Valet Girls and now directs quickies such as Guardian). The transfer is augmented for 16:9 and looks significantly better than the video version, giving this low-budget effort a relatively lush feel, though the Iraqi desert does look as though it was an hour or so drive out of Los Angeles. --Kim Newman

  • Dustin Hoffman - In The Frame CollectionDustin Hoffman - In The Frame Collection | DVD | (29/10/2007) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £24.99

Robert Benton) (1979): Returning home late from work one night a career-obsessed Ted Kramer is told by his wife Joanna that she is leaving him. After a life of being 'somebody's daughter' or 'somebody's wife ' she's going off to find herself - leaving Ted to care for their 6 year-old son. Ted while trying to hold down his job gets to really know his son: cooking his meals taking him to the park understanding every need and fear. For the first time in his life he feels like a fulfilled parent. But then Joanna returns. And she wants her son back... Papillon (Dir. Franklin J. Schaffner) (1973): They called him Papillon meaning butterfly. If only he had wings to go with the name. Unable to fly Henri Charriere virtually willed himself free. He persisted until he did the impossible: escape Devil's Island. Stranger Than Fiction (Dir. Marc Forster) (2006): This is an inventive comedy about a novelist (Emma Thompson) struggling to complete her latest and potentially finest book - she only has to find a way to kill off her main character Harold Crick and she'll be done. Little does she know that Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) is inexplicably alive and well in the real world and suddenly aware of her words. Fiction and reality collide when the bewildered and hilariously resistant Harold hears what she has in mind and realizes he must find a way to change her (and his) ending. Joan Of Arc (Dir. Luc Besson) (1999): The year is 1429. France is in polical and religious turmoil as members of the royal family battle for rule. But one peasant girl from a remote village gave her country the miracle it was looking for. Milla Jovovich is Joan of Arc a young woman who would inspire and lead her countrymen until her execution at the age of nineteen. Raised in a religious family Joan witnessed her sister's rape and death at the hands of an invading army. Years later as the same war raged on Joan stood before her king with a message she claimed came from God: give her an army and in God's name she would reclaim his diminished kingdom. Tootsie (Dir. Sydney Pollack) (1982): Michael Dorsey is fine actor but an irreproachable perfectionist who can hardly make ends meet; the best he can do for his wallet is take on a couple of jobs as a part-time drama coach and a part-time waiter. But when with the help of a few accessories (including rouge and a padded bra) he transforms himself into Dorothy Michaels everything changes. Dorothy lands a hot job on a soap opera monopolizes the covers of glossy magazines and wins thousands of adoring fans. But when he falls head-over-heels for his co-star Julie (Jessica Lange) he's got a real problem: How can he tell Julie he loves her when she thinks he's a she? Accidental Hero (Dir. Stephen Frears) (1992): Davis is ace reporter Gale Gayley who literally falls into the story of a lifetime when she's a passenger on a airplane that crashes into a Chicago bridge. In the smoke and darkness she's saved by a rude foul-mouthed hero who promptly disappears into the night..leaving only his shoe behind. When Gale's TV Station offers a million dollars to the mystery hero a gentle Vietnam vet (Garcia) appears to claim the prize - and share it with the city's homeless. But this screwball Cinderella story is complicated by the fact that the real hero is a small-time crook (Hoffman) whom nobody believes. Both men have something heroic inside as well as something to hide and it's up to Gale to discover the true meaning of courage.

Antonio Banderas is the titular Desperado out for revenge against the drug-lord responsible for the death of his girlfriend in Robert Rodriguez's semi-sequel, semi-remake of his debut El Mariachi (1992). Set in a Mexican town, this is a contemporary Western that combines elements familiar from classic Sam Peckinpah movies with the post-Reservoir Dogs school of film-making. With a threadbare story and unbelievable characters acting in unbelievable ways the result is a repulsively blood-soaked comic-book treatment, in which the best scenes are bar-stool monologues by Steve Buscemi and Quentin Tarantino. The film also introduced Salma Hayek to English-speaking audiences. She's incandescently sensual here and survived a farcical rock-video-style sex scene to become a Rodriguez regular. On the DVD: Desperado is a Superbit DVD, meaning maximum disc space has been given to the film, with a data rate close to double that of a normal DVD, no extras and just a choice between Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 soundtracks. The 1.78:1 anamorphically enhanced transfer is virtually flawless, with excellent detail, accurate colours and a refreshing absence of grain. The Dolby Digital soundtrack is very good and the DTS even better, though as this comparatively low-budget film was originally released in stereo it's not state-of-the-art even when remixed. Only those with high-end home cinema set-ups are likely to notice significant technical improvements over a standard DVD version. --Gary S. Dalkin
