Robin Of Sherwood - The Complete Series 2 | DVD | (01/07/2002)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP The second series of Robin of Sherwood sets up both a sense of melancholy for the impending departure of Michael Praed and excitement for his imminent replacement by Jason Connery. These seven episodes are the very best of Praed and co, building upon their established camaraderie and making forest-frolicking seem like TV's best ever gig. "The Prophecy" has a running thread of back plot that will explain Praed's Doctor Who-like transformation to Connery (and all so he could cameo in Dynasty). Mystical Herne predicts the death of a great king, but the merry men are more interested in the introduction of new semi-regular Prince John (Philip Davis). The series becomes braver as it continues by delving deeper into the black arts and exploring such matters as anti-Semitism and pagan beliefs. Gisburne's schemes to capture the bandits grow more desperate, while Herne's advice grows more cryptic and Marion's love for Robin grows stronger. All of which builds to the excellent two-part "The Swords of Wayland" and its coda "The Greatest Enemy". Now prepare yourself for something completely different. On the DVD: Robin of Sherwood's first box set was going to take some beating, but this second series set is as good as anyone has managed for a TV show on DVD. The digital transfers and new Dolby soundtracks (with optional original mono and music-only tracks) are fantastic. The commentary on "The Swords of Wayland" from the director and producer is insightful and endearing. The third part of the behind-the-scenes documentary, still interviewing everyone involved, is consistently fascinating and runs 42 minutes. Add to that two galleries of stills with 156 pictures, seven minutes of outtakes and, for curiosity value, the French and American versions of the Main Title sequence. You can tell some real heart has gone into this release. --Paul Tonks

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie | DVD | (13/10/2003)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP As the eagerly awaited Cowboy Bebop feature film reunites the original director, screenwriter, composer and vocal cast, it's not surprising that the film plays like an expanded TV episode. What should be the routine capture of a two-bit hacker by Faye escalates into a deadly game of cat and mouse, as Spike and the gang struggle to prevent the evil Vincent Volaju from murdering every human on Mars. Director Shinichiro Watanabe handles the action sequences with his usual panache: inside the sinister Cherious Medical research facility, Spike fights a beautiful agent, using a push broom in a series of manoeuvres Jackie Chan might envy; the climactic duel between Spike and Vincent plays against innocent yet eerie images of a Halloween carnival. This will delight fans of the series and provide an excellent introduction for the uninitiated. --Charles Solomon

| RRP For nearly 30 years now, businessman John Rabe (Ulrich Tukur) has been living with his wife Dora in the capital city of China, Nanking, where he heads the Siemens industrial plant. It is difficult for him to hand over the reins of the operation to his successor and return to Berlin. He has learned to love the country, and he knows that while he is a man of influence here, at the Siemens headquarters in Berlin he is replaceable. During the farewell ball in his honour, Nanking is bombed by Japanese airplanes following the Japanese army's capture of Shanghai. As panic breaks out in the city, Rabe resolutely opens the company gates and offers refuge to the desperate families of his employees. Learning that the city will be attacked by the Japanese, an international diplomat Dr. Rosen (Daniel Bruhl) presents an idea to the city officials about the creation of a safety zone for civilians that had saved lives in Shanghai. John Rabe is nominated as chairman of the new safety zone. The committee also elect Dr. Wilson (Steve Buscemi), an American senior physician of the local hospital, who detests Rabe because he believes he works in the interests of the Third Reich. These three men must now learn to work together to try and protect the people. While the Imperial Japanese Army continue to unleash a wave of brutality, rape and murder on the civilian population, Rabe, Wilson and Rosen courageously negotiate with the Japanese and wrest a guarantee for a safety zone for the civilians. However hundreds of thousands of desperate people pour into the zone - much more than expected. The Japanese continue to harass and attack the population, and it becomes a life and death struggle as Rabe and his comrades try to protect them. The Japanese now plan to use a pretence to storm the zone and with the threat of a looming massacre - so a race against time begins for Rabe, Wilson and Rosen...

| RRP UK Release 5-Disc DVD Set (Tom Horn / The Towering Inferno / Bullitt / The Cincinnati Kid / Never So Few) - TOM HORN: The saga of Tom Horn - areal-life "enforcer" of Old West days - held a particular fascination for another legend. Hollywood icon Steve McQueen starred in and executive produced what would be his next-to-last movie, a gritty, exciting recreation of Horn's latter-day career in a turn-of-the-century West where gentler ways supplanted the law of the gun - and Horn would be an unwitting victim of that change. THE TOWERING INFERNO: The world's tallest building is skyscraping testimony to ingenuity and innovation. In the hands of "Master of Disaster" film producer Irwin Allen ("The Poseidon Adventure"), it's also the world's tallest matchstick. An all-star cast gathers for this tall story of lofty dimensions: eight Academy Award nominations and three Oscars. On the night of the building's dedication, fire erupts, trapping people on the upper floors... and igniting multiple tales of heroism and loss involving a firefighter (Steve McQueen), an architect (Paul Newman) and others caught in the steel-and-glass inferno (including William Holden, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire and Jennifer Jones). With Star power, pyrotechnics and suspense in abundance, THE TOWERING INFERNO sizzled at box offices worldwide. BULLTIT: Detective Frank Bullitt's new assignment seems routine: protecting a star witness for an important trial. But before the night is out, the witness lies dying, and the cool, no-nonsense Bullitt (Steve McQueen) won't rest until the shooters - and the kingpin pulling their strings - are nailed. From opening shot to closing shootout, BULLITT crackles with authenticity: on location San Francisco filming, crisp dialogue and to-the-letter police, hospital and morgue prodcedures. An Oscar winner for Best Film Editing (1968), this razor-edged thriller features one of cinema history's most memorable car chases. Buckle up... and brace for unbeatable action.

He was joined by The Merry Band of Pranksters, a renegade group of counterculture truth-seekers, including Neal Cassady, the American icon immortalized in Kerouac's On the Road, and the driver and painter of the psychedelic Magic Bus. Kesey and the Pranksters intended to make a documentary about their trip, shooting footage on 16MM, but the film was never finished and the footage has remained virtually unseen...until now.
