  A half-hour parody, Frankenthumb is one of a series of featurette pastiches of famous movies masterminded by Steve Oederkerk (Kung Pow: Enter the Fist) cast with human thumbs with CGI-inset mouths and eyes, a process that is weirder than it is funny. A précis of the 1931 Frankenstein, shot on impressive (and beautifully-lit) miniature sets, the film tells the old, old story: megalomaniac Dr Frankenthumb and his inept assistant Humpy create life in the laboratory, unleashing a monster named Pepper ("because he's brought spice into our lives") who goes on a rampage, menaces the daughter of a somewhat irritating Italian man, and is pursued by a mob into a burning windmill, whereupon a guest star from an earlier mini-epic (Bat Thumb) turns up to deliver some sort of an ending. One or two good jokes pop up, but probably not enough. On the DVD: Frankenthumb on disc is a very nice package, containing storyboards, manufactured outtakes and cast interviews, trailers for this and the rest of the series (Thumb Wars, The Blair Thumb, Thumbtanic, Bat Thumb, The Godthumb) and a mass commentary track by the entire creative team that makes a cheerful accompaniment. --Kim Newman

  The second series of Andromeda unveils a change in approach. A new traditionally heroic title theme, accompanied by rousing voice-over is one noticeable difference. Another is Kevin Sorbo's even shorter haircut. But it's back to the gore and violence that marked the cliffhanging finale of the first year with "The Widening Gyre", where many perils are resolved while others are revealed. An all-too-short deadline is also imposed on Dylan's Commonwealth dream (confirming the show's additional two-series renewal), when it's confirmed how long it will be before the travelling Magog arrive. "Exit Strategies" is all about inner demons. Poor Harper is left with a very real internal problem that leads him to contemplate the unthinkable. Rommie is wrestling with an alternate physical self. Rev is battling his religious conscience against his very survival. With so much B-plot, you could almost overlook the main story that sees the Maru crash land on an ice world--if the dazzling FX would let you that is. Beka gets an overdue share of romantic attention in "A Heart for Falsehood Framed". A sacred gem is the nub of a diplomatic dispute. In typically unpredictable fashion, the plot contrives to see all interested parties caught up in a multi-layered game of switching fakes. Some new angles appear in "Pitiless as the Sun". In case anyone's forgotten, Trance is given opportunity to thicken the mystery surrounding exactly what she is. This occurs as we meet a brand-new adversary, the unsavoury Pyrians. Xenophobia, drug addiction and slavery are all scrutinised in this episode--enough plot for an X-File. This is funny since Cigarette-Smoking Man William B Davis guest stars. Hunting for a once-glorious leader who would benefit Dylan's cause, the Maru and crew make a "Last Call at the Broken Hammer", a run-down bar in the middle of a wasteland. There are lots of twists in a mystery of hidden identities and agendas amongst the bar's patrons. Watch out for Gordon Woolvett's real-life wife among them. Another welcome sight in this episode is a change of wardrobe for the regulars, who have been sweating it out in the same gear for far too long. --Paul Tonks

What begins as a seemingly straightforward attempt to recreate the frenetic novel - starring Steve Coogan as the title figure and Rob Brydon as his Uncle Toby - quickly derails into a behind-the-scenes document of the film's actual production. Working triple time (for he also plays Tristram's father) Coogan is hilarious as the insecure ""Steve Coogan"" a shallow actor who is more interested in his cute assistant (Naomie Harris) than the mother of his newborn child (the always delightful Kelly Macdonald). Meanwhile ""Rob Brydon"" is trying desperately to convince ""Steve Coogan"" that his role is a co-lead not merely a supporting one. As the production threatens to spin out of control the filmmakers hire Gillian Anderson (playing herself of course) to fill a much-needed role.... It's All Gone Pete Tong (2004): Frankie Wilde (Paul Kaye) is the hearing-impaired DJ who delights the clubbers on the island of Ibiza by coupling his larger-than-life drug and alcohol-fuelled persona with undeniable skills behind the turntables. But as Frankie's hearing rapidly disintegrates and his former manager wife friends and record label slowly fade away the distraught DJ plunges into the depths of despair... Grand Theft Parsons (2004): There are times when it's right and proper to simply bury the dead. This is not one of those times. Gram Parsons was one of the most influential musicians of his time; a genius who knew Elvis and the Stones and led the Byrds. As fame and fortune came within his grasp he died unexpectedly in 1973. When Gram's best friend and road manager Phil Kaufman (Johnny Knoxville) hears the news he gets busy to fulfil an old promise - to cremate his buddy in the majestic desert wilderness of Joshua Tree. The plan looks great but there are snags - he has to steal the body from under the noses of the authorities then evade the police Gram's father and an avenging ex-girlfriend with only a stoned hippy for company and driving a psychedelic hearse!
