  When Carry On Teacher was released in 1959, the series was still in its infancy but all the familiar constituent parts were already in place. Innuendo, naturally, reigns supreme and on the brink of the permissive 1960s it's surprising what Peter Rodgers and the gang were able to get away with. "Are you satisfied with your equipment, Miss Allcock?", child psychologist Leslie Phillips asks gym mistress Joan Sims. Naturally, it isn't five minutes before Miss Allcock's shorts have split, leading to a series of pants gags. And we're off. For Carry On fans, Teacher contains many of the funniest lines and certainly some of the best performances from the whole series. Kenneth Williams is still acting rather than giving his mannerisms a good work out. Hattie Jacques is establishing her gorgon-with-a-soft-centre-for-the-right-man persona and Charles Hawtrey's birdlike twitching makes him ideal as the precious music teacher. A youthful Carol White and Richard O'Sullivan are among the scheming pupils. But you don't have to be a diehard Carry On fan to appreciate the boisterous, sub-St Trinians comedy. And thanks to Ted Ray's poignant acting as the headmaster, there's a real moment of Mr Chips-style bathos at the very end. On the DVD: Carry On Teacher doesn't gain much from being presented in widescreen. Much of its appeal lies in its familiarity. All we ask for is a clear print--and in black and white this is diamond sharp--and decent sound quality. The whole thing fits like a comfortable old shoe. But apart from the scene index there are no extras on the disc. Given the cult status of the Carry On films, and the wealth of documentary material which has been made about them and their stars, you'd think something extra could have been offered with the DVD releases to make them a more worthwhile alternative to the video. --Piers Ford

John Travolta plays a barely educated museum guard who is laid off from his job and ends up holding his former boss (Blythe Danner) and a bunch of schoolchildren hostage. Dustin Hoffman is a former television-network journalist making a grab at the limelight again by pushing and controlling press coverage of the story. What follows is by the numbers and not nearly as enlightening or enthralling as other films (such as Dog Day Afternoon or Billy Wilder's Ace in the Hole) about simple events manipulated into a media circus.   Disney couldn't resist the temptation to remake 1961's popular comedy The Absent Minded Professor, so they cast Robin Williams as Professor Philip Brainard (a role vaguely related to the character originated by Fred MacMurray), and the result is a comedy that, frankly, doesn't fully deserve its modest success. It's admittedly clever to a point, and certainly the digitally flubberised special effects provide the kind of movie magic that's entertaining for children and adults alike. The professor can't even remember his own wedding day (much to the chagrin of his fiancée, played by Marcia Gay Harden), and now his academic rival (Christopher McDonald) is trying to steal his latest and purely accidental invention-flying rubber, or ... flubber. The green goo magnifies energy and can be used as an amazing source of power, but in the hands of screenwriter John Hughes it becomes just another excuse to recycle a lot of Home Alone-style slapstick humour involving a pair of bumbling would-be flubber thieves. There's also a floating robot named Weebo and some catchy music by Danny Elfman to accompany dancing globs of flubber, but the story's too thin to add up to anything special. Lightweight fun, but, given the title, it lacks a certain bounce. Of course, that didn't stop Disney's marketing wizards from turning it into a home video hit. --Jeff Shannon

  This DVD companion to the Imperial War Museum's Second World War Ministry Of Food Exhibition is the definitive compilation of their own film archive's holdings on every stage of the food chain; food production preparation and consumption. It affords a very detailed insight into the logistical struggle to feed the British during the dark days of war; both fighting servicemen and civilians on the home front. The Ministry Of Food had the unenviable task of keeping the public constantly aware of the shortage of food as ships containing much needed imports were a constant target for the Luftwaffe and the German Navy. It was imperative that the nation endeavored to self-sufficiency as far as was practicable and these films encourage the British public's positive adaptation to the privations of shortages and rationing with an emphasis on how to be frugal and inventive on the 'Kitchen Front' on avoiding waste on reducing imports through the promotion of 'seasonal' produce and fool-proof instructional films on how to grow one's own food. The WVS and 'Food Flying Squads' leapt into nightly action during the 'Blitz' to feed the wardens rescue teams firemen and civilians who had been bombed out of their homes. Communal dining in a chain of 'British Restaurants' helped ration coupons to go further. The Ministry of information used many star names from the theatre and variety revues of the time such as Tommy Trinder Ted Ray Ronald Shiner Arthur Haynes Charlie Chester Jimmy Handley John Slater Ralph Richardson and Hubert Gregg. The Army is commonly said to march on its stomach but feeding the forces on the frontline was fraught with challenges. The Ministry of Information commissioned short-form Public Information Films on all aspects of the war effort and the finale of this collection is a selection of the very best of these films that make reference to food helping with the harvest and the famous Food Flashes all of which were shown in the cinemas of the time.
