Comprising singles, videos and live recordings spanning their five-year career, The Complete Jam 1977-1982 is comprehensive and absolutely essential viewing for any Jam fan. As well as containing all their greatest hits, from "All Around the World" to the austerely funky "Town Called Malice", its an exhilarating and occasionally bizarre retrospective of a bygone pop age. The earliest live material, recorded for the 1977 punk programme So It Goes, is the most exciting; stark and grainy, conveying the sheer tearaway thrill and a sense of the impact the band had, coming on like the Grange Hill bullies hi-jacking the school bands equipment. They are more well behaved on Marc, the show fronted by the former T Rex star who announces them like hes announcing his own musical death warrant. Theres also amusing footage of the band on a Swedish pop show, with Weller grumpily refusing to answer questions from the hostess like "Are Jam punk?" Some of the videos accompanying the singles reflect the naive self-consciousness of the early video age, some of the bands sartorial choices might make them wince now, and some of Wellers earliest lyrics dont bear up well to scrutiny. But this remains testimony to the imperishable greatness of a band who remained successfully aloof to some of the sillier vagaries of their day. On the DVD: The Complete Jam includes a "multi-angle scrapbook", a brief profile of the "Jam fan phenomenon" in which Weller-lovers mumble their appreciation over cups of tea, as well as a profile of the bands history, which is cobbled together from material already available elsewhere on the DVD. Some of the earlier footage remains unpolished but in the Jams case thats a benefit rather than a drawback. --David Stubbs

Playing all 31 tracks on The Old Grey Whistle Test Volume 3 will make some viewers believe the producers are now beginning to scrape the bottom of the barrel; others will think that finally they're getting around to the good stuff. Given that the series somehow managed to take an enormous range of music on board while at the same time seeming entirely consistent (surely the secret of its success), there's evidence for both points of view. The case for the prosecution might cite Janis Ian (her melancholic self-obsession now seems indulgent to the point of prissiness), Al Stewart ("Year of the Cat" is simply a dreary song) or Orange Juice (did they ever really mean anything much to anyone?). The case for the defence, however, is pretty strong overall, with highlights such as Bowie doing "Oh You Pretty Things", Johnny Winter covering "Jumping Jack Flash" as if he was its rightful owner, and Kings BB and Freddie bringing it all back home with two excellent performances. There's something for everyone along the way. Proggers get Discipline-era King Crimson, which saw Adrian Belew saving the band from disappearing up its own fundament; folkies get an unplugged Fairport Convention; punks get John Cooper Clarke and the Jam; somebody or other gets the Bangles. However, if there's one track that justifies the existence of this disc all by itself, it has to be "In a Hole" from the Jesus and Mary Chain, whose glorious nihilism made the Pistols seem like a folk group. On the DVD: The Old Grey Whistle Test Volume 3 DVD is presented in old-telly 4:3 ratio and offers numerous extras, including contributor profiles and links, a commentary and an artists' gallery. --Roger Thomas
