  Imaginatively rendered but slightly chilly, this 1951 Disney adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic is also appropriately surreal. Alice (voiced by Kathryn Beaumont) has all the anticipated experiences: shrinking and growing, meeting the White Rabbit, having tea with the Mad Hatter, and so on. The characterisation is very strong, illustrating how hard the Disney team worked to bring screen personality to Carroll's eccentric creations. In the Line of Fire's back-story--Horrigan is haunted by his inability to prevent John Kennedy's assassination (Eastwood is computer-generated into archival footage)--is more than a little hokey, but the plotting itself is smartly, even ingeniously, constructed. Petersen manages a vice-like grip on the tension and Eastwood even gets to deliver an ever-more-timely lecture on the diminished nature of the office of President. Eastwood's as gruff and as infuriating to the by-the-book Powers That Be as ever and Malkovich oozes delightful menace. Rene Russo capably co-stars as a colleague with whom Horrigan gets friendly. --David Kronke

Thompson stars as the estate's housekeeper a high-spirited strong-minded young woman who watches the goings-on upstairs with horror. Despite her apprehensions she and Stevens gradually fall in love though neither will admit it and only give vent to their charged feelings via fierce arguments. Marvellously acted by a supporting cast that includes Christopher Reeve and Hugh Grant.

Perhaps, but directed with vitality and surprising wit. Noisy, overbearing and forgettable, the film has none of the purity of its predecessor's simple story; and it makes a huge miscalculation in allowing a terrible tragedy to occur rather than stretch out the tension.
