A final tragedy shocks Tim into facing reality and brings to the forefront the things that really matter in life.

  Liam Neeson gives a bravura performance as the title character in KINSEY, which details the controversial and dramatic rise of sex researcher Alfred C. Kinsey. Raised in a sexually repressed household with a preacher father (John Lithgow) who believes the zipper is the devil's work, young Kinsey goes against his father's wishes and studies biology, eventually becoming a leading authority on the gall wasp. His skill at classification, organization, and research, combined with his own burgeoning sexuality following his marriage to Clara McMillen (Laura Linney), leads him to begin investigating the nature of human sexuality. Working at Indiana University, Kinsey finds that sex is something many Americans have been waiting a long time to talk about. Unfortunately, others consider his work to be disgusting and want it ended. Writer-director Bill Condon (GODS AND MONSTERS) alternates between short black-and-white scenes of Kinsey answering his own sex survey questions, with longer colour scenes that flash back to the important moments of his life. Kinsey's boyhood through his formative years, and his obsessions with the gall wasp and human sexual behaviour, are thoroughly documented. The publication of the seminal books SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR IN THE HUMAN MALE (1948) and SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR IN THE HUMAN FEMALE (1953) mark his primary achievements. Interestingly, it is the second book that causes the biggest panic, as a repressed society refuses to believe that women have the same needs and desires as men. Neeson and Linney make a wonderfully refreshing couple, freely sharing each other for all to see. Peter Sarsgaard, Chris O'Donnell, and Timothy Hutton lend fine supporting work as Kinsey's staff. KINSEY is an enlightening, engaging, yet frightening film, revealing how far the understanding of American sexuality has come--and how far it still has to go.

Unfortunately Lucy lost her short-term memory months ago in a car accident and for her each day is October the 13th. She follows the same routine every day - breakfast at the same restaurant pineapple-picking with her dad and eventually bed time where sleep wipes away her short-term memory. Henry however refuses to be forgotten and as his puppy love matures he embarks on a quest to restore her memory or at least be a part of her everyday routine. But vying for Lucy's attention isn't always easy. Henry explores various approaches before making a video for Lucy to watch every morning reminding her of who she is and what she's doing... Closer (2004): Writer Patrick Marber adapted the screenplay from his own scathing stageplay in which a chance meeting between Englishman Dan (Jude Law) and American visitor Alice blossoms into a troubled relationship bringing together and then affecting a second couple involving Larry (Clive Owen) and Anna (Julia Roberts). Sex and love are explored capturing all the vulnerability and brutality of people falling in and out of love... Cruel Intentions (1999): Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) are two gorgeous filthy rich manipulative step-sibblings from Manhattan's upper east side. Bored of the girls he has so easily seduced in the past Sebastian has set his sights on the ultimate challenge - the beautiful virginal headmasters' daughter Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon). Kathryn sees the perfect opportunity for a wager.   The Last Samurai gives epic sweep to an intimate story of cultures at a crossroads as Japan undergoes tumultuous transition to a more Westernised society in 1876-77. Opposing this "progress" is a rebellion of samurai warriors, holding fast to their traditions of honour despite strategic disadvantage. As a captive of the samurai leader (Ken Watanabe), Algren learns, appreciates, and adopts the Samurai code, switching sides for a climactic battle that will put everyone's honour to the ultimate test. All of which makes director Edward Zwick's noble epic eminently worthwhile, even if its Hollywood trappings (including an all-too-conventional ending) prevent it from being the masterpiece that Zwick and screenwriter John Logan clearly wanted it to be. Instead, The Last Samurai is an elegant mainstream adventure, impressive in all aspects of its production. It may not engage the emotions as effectively as Logan's script for Gladiator, but like Cruise's character, it finds its own quality of honour. --Jeff Shannon
