Criminal psychologist Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne) knows how killers think and how their minds work. Why? His father is The Surgeon, a serial killer who has taken the lives of more than 20 people. He works with NYPD detective Gil Arroyo (Lou Diamond Phillips); Detective Dani Powell (Aurora Perrineau), a headstrong cop; Dr. Edrisa Tanaka (Keiko Agena), an off-center coroner; and Detective JT Tarmel (Frank Harts), who questions whether Bright is a psychopath himself. But Bright's best resource is his homicidal yet oddly loving father, Dr. Martin Whitly (Michael Sheen). As he helps track down dangerous criminals, Bright also battles his own demons and it doesn't help that his mother, former leading socialite Jessica Whitly (Bellamy Young), has an opinion on every aspect of his life. Thankfully, he has the support of his annoyingly normal sister, Ainsley (Halston Sage), a TV journalist. Malcolm Bright isn't a serial killer, he was just raised by one.

When nine-year-old Rob Cole felt the life force slipping from his mother's hand he could not foresee that this terrifying awareness of impending death was a gift that would lead him from the familiar life of 11th-century London to small villages throughout England and finally to the medical school at Ispahan. Though apprenticed to an itinerant barber surgeon (Stellan Skarsgaard), it is the dazzling surgery of a Jewish physician trained by the legendary Persian physician Ibn Sina (Ben Kingsley) that inspires him to accept his gift and to commit his life to healing by studying at Ibn Sina's school. Despite the ban on Christian students, Rob goes there, disguising himself as a Jew to gain admission. Gordon has written an adventurous and inspiring tale of a quest for medical knowledge pursued in a violent world full of superstition and prejudice.

Attila King of the Huns (Gerard Butler) is a visionary who sees more in his people than they see in themselves. While the Huns are content to plunder and extort the surrounding nations Attila looks beyond to the possibility of an empire and new world order. Roman General Flavius Aetius (Powers Boothe) embodies the best and worst of Rome in the final years of her existence. He is motivated by one overriding goal: Rome must continue to rule the world. Two different visions of destiny held by the two strongest men of the century; these conflicts are at the heart of 'Attila the Hun'.

  • Cal [DVD]Cal | DVD | (09/09/2013) from £10.78   |  Saving you £5.21 (48.33%)   |  RRP £15.99

Set in the economically depressed austerity Britain of today, Cal is a startlingly powerful drama and the follow-up to the hit 2009 film, Shank. Twenty-year-old Cal returns from France to Britain after receiving news that his mother is ill. His finds his home city of Bristol facing hard economic times brought on by the global economic crisis, with poverty and crime on the rise and rioting and looting almost a nightly occurrence. It's not a warm homecoming as his sick mother remains stubbornly homophobic and wants nothing to do with the now openly gay Cal while his alcoholic and manic Auntie Jane, now living in a rundown council house, dulls her stagnation with welfare funded booze and disturbing attempts to sexually seduce her nephew. Navigating his way across this new landscape he meets a young student who needs his help. However his act of kindness brings him into contact with a lawless drug dealing pimp and a race against time to make peace with his mother and get out of town as quickly as possible. An intense tale of a family mired in poverty, angry and lost but still searching for love, respect and acceptance.

  • The Bests [DVD]The Bests | DVD | (18/05/2009) from £24.28   |  Saving you £-9.29 (-62.00%)   |  RRP £14.99

A factual drama telling the remarkable but little known story of George Best's relationship with his alcoholic mother. The film will have a tragicomic tone and focus on Best''s year long retirement from football aged 26. A year in which Best decided he was going to enjoy himself. Sod Manchester United. Sod football. Sod everyone and everything except himself. But the harder Best tries to establish himself in the life of a Soho dandy the more surprised he is to find himself pulled back to his raw Belfast roots. George is trying to concentrate on dating three Miss Worlds at the same time and building up his collection of night-clubs and sports cars when he discovers his formerly tee-total 'mam' has taken to heavy drinking. And he thinks it''s all his fault... Through the course of this 90 minute film the black farce of Best's life - his carousing his evasion of those trying to save him or lure him back to football his stumbling into the politics of Northern Ireland - will be counter-pointed by the tragedy of his mother''s slow death from alcoholism. Until finally Best gives up on hedonism and puts on his boots again... only to discover his genius has gone. The Bests will be an unfamiliar telling of a very familiar story. It will capture Best at a point where his future his mother's future and the future of Belfast are all hanging in the balance. It's the forgotten year of the George Best legend but it may just be the most important.

  • Attila The Hun [2001]Attila The Hun | DVD | (04/03/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

Straight out of the American television movie school of historical thought, Attila the Hun is a glossy, at times long and often ridiculous re-telling of one of the great stories of Ancient Rome. How much of it is historically accurate is debatable--much of the action is ludicrously far fetched--and the image that most of us have of Attila is quite different to the bare-chested, longhaired reject from an 80s soft rock band that is presented here. The film does have its own slightly warped charm, though. The storyline is surprisingly complex, involving plots and counter plots, and the movie does exhibit a sense of epic somewhat in the vein of Gladiator, but is sadly lacking the budget, style or talent. The acting is awful (as befits anything that stars Steven Berkoff) and reduces the political machinations of Rome to little more than Dynasty in togas. Gerrard Butler is a fine actor--as he proved in the recent TV drama The Jury--but is woeful here, delivering his lines in a bizarre trans-Atlantic Scottish accent. At three hours it's way too long, too. There does remain something strangely compelling about Atilla the Hun, though you'll find more reliable facts about Roman history in an Asterix book. --Phil Udell
