Sixteen-year-old Terry Connor is sent, along with a few of his friends, to an Outward Bound centre. On his first day at the centre Terry is taken pot-holing by the senior instructor, Alex. All goes well until, at 100 feet underground, Alex goes to search for the torch that Terry has dropped.Hours pass, and, to Terry's astonishment, when Alex finally returns he has no recollection whatever of having been absent. Terry suspects something sinister is taking place - it is surely no coincidence that there is a secret Ministry of Defence establishment nearby. But just how deeply his curiosity will involve him in dangerous matters becomes clear when he learns the truth about the 'Jensen Code'...The Jensen Code was a highly unusual children's thriller series, written by Carey Harrison (author son of actor Rex Harrison), and starring David (Dai) Bradley, the BAFTA-winning young star of Kes, as the teenager who unwittingly uncovers a terrifying space-age espionage project. This complete 13-part series, rarely seen since its original transmission in 1973, is released here for the first time in any format. Originally made in colour, The Jensen Code now exists only as black and white telerecordings made for overseas sales, the full colour episodes having been junked many years ago.

  • Candyman 2 - Farewell To The Flesh [1995]Candyman 2 - Farewell To The Flesh | DVD | (21/10/2002) from £12.87   |  Saving you £0.12 (0.93%)   |  RRP £12.99

A stylish sequel though inferior to its classic predecessor, Bill Condon's Candyman 2: Farewell to the Flesh deepens our knowledge of what made the murdered Daniel Robitaille turn into the monster that haunts dreams and mirrors. But some of it is still pretty routine: schoolteacher Annie takes a long time to connect her family's plantation-owning past and her own artistic talent with the legend, and is far too ready to say the Candyman's name five times in a mirror to debunk her pupils' fears. The setting--New Orleans in Carnival time with a disc jockey whimsically reminding us that Carnival is the last farewell to pleasure before the rigours of Lent--and the atmospheric score by Philip Glass give the film some of its class. Tony Todd, who returns as the Candyman, gives the monstrous spectre with a hook for a hand a quiet dignity and sadness which impresses. His life was torn agonisingly from him and he is mad for vengeance, yet he has an artistic temperament and loved Annie's kinswoman Caroline. Condon captures an attractive elegiac tone in much of this, as well as moments of brutal horror. On the DVD: Candyman 2 is presented in widescreen 1.78:1; there is an attractive crispness to the picture which does real justice to the film's impressive sense of place. The music score comes across well in Dolby Digital stereo. There is a theatrical trailer, but no other features. --Roz Kaveney

  • The Persuaders - Complete [1971]The Persuaders - Complete | DVD | (07/10/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £69.99

Between heroic spells as the Saint and James Bond, Roger Moore was teamed with Tony Curtis in The Persuaders, a derivative but fun series about a couple of millionaire dilettante adventurers who swan around the world competing for the attention of beautiful women and getting involved in perplexing mysteries. Moore is Lord Brett Sinclair, an upper crust Brit of impeccable breeding, while Curtis is Danny Wilde, an up-from-the-streets self-made man whose trademark is a pair of brown gloves. The allegedly tasteful Brett and the crasser Danny both model a succession of garish early 70s fashions while their pursuits of duplicitous crumpet usually wind up with the women getting away and the heroes stuck with each other. Given all that, this may well be the most blatantly homoerotic of all the buddy television pairings (see the eponymous stars of Starsky and Hutch, Regan and Carter in The Sweeney, Bodie and Doyle of The Professionals) that ran ove! r the screen in the 70s, in which the male leads sublimated their feelings for each other by pulling out their guns and shooting at baddies. --Kim Newman
