The Sopranos, writer-producer-director David Chase's extraordinary television series, is nominally an urban gangster drama, but its true impact strikes closer to home: This ambitious TV series chronicles a dysfunctional, suburban American family in bold relief. And for protagonist Tony Soprano, there is the added complexity posed by heading twin families, his collegial mob clan and his own, nouveau riche brood. The series' brilliant first season is built around what Tony learns when, whipsawed between those two worlds, he finds himself plunged into depression and seeks psychotherapy--a gesture at odds with his mid-level capo's machismo, yet instantly recognisable as a modern emotional test. With analysis built into the very spine of the show's elaborate episodic structure, creator Chase and his formidable corps of directors, writers and actors weave an unpredictable series of parallel and intersecting plot arcs that twist from tragedy to farce to social realism. While creating for a smaller screen, they enjoy a far larger canvas than a single movie would afford, and the results, like the very best episodic television, attain a richness and scope far closer to a novel than movies normally get.Unlike Francis Coppola's operatic dramatisation of Mario Puzo's Godfather epic, The Sopranos sustains a poignant, even mundane intimacy in its focus on Tony, brought to vivid life by James Gandolfini's mercurial performance. Alternately seductive, exasperated, fearful and murderous, Gandolfini is utterly convincing even when executing brutal shifts between domestic comedy and dramatic violence. Both he and the superb team of Italian-American actors recruited as his loyal (and, sometimes, not-so-loyal) henchman and their various "associates" make this mob as credible as the evocative Bronx and New Jersey locations where the episodes were filmed. The first season's other life force is Livia Soprano, Tony's monstrous, meddlesome mother. As Livia, the late Nancy Marchand eclipses her long career of patrician performances to create an indelibly earthy, calculating matriarch who shakes up both families; Livia also serves as foil and rival to Tony's loyal, usually level-headed wife, Carmela (Edie Falco). Lorraine Bracco makes Tony's therapist, Dr Melfi, a convincing confidante, by turns "professional", perceptive and sexy; the duo's therapeutic relationship is also depicted with uncommon accuracy. Such grace notes only enrich what is not merely an aesthetic high point for commercial television, but an absorbing film masterwork that deepens with subsequent screenings. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

Governments multinational corporations and religious organisations have secretly wielded tremendous power by holding back critical data or spreading misinformation to further their own aims. This programme exposes the almost inconceivable stories of deceit conspiracy sanctioned piracy and scientific knowledge hidden from the world for far too long. Up for Sale On October 4 1957 the Soviets launch the legendary orbiter Sputnik ushering in the Space Age. In 1998 the Russian Federation launches the first stage of the space station Freedom. While at first glance it seems that little has changed closer scrutiny reveals that billions of American dollars are being funnelled to Russia to secure its participation in the space station partnership. Described by the elite of NASA as a foreign aid project for the Russians the principal purpose of the program may be to abate the mass exodus of Russian rocket scientists to unfriendly nations interested in developing weapons of mass destruction. Heavy Watergate: the War Against Cold Fusion On March 23 1989 respected chemists Dr. Stanley Pons and Dr. Martin Fleishman make an announcement that rocks the world of science. At the beginning of Thumbtanic, thumb-puppet/animation maestro Steve Oedekerk's superb parody of Titanic, the camera pans over the wreckage of the, err, Thumbtanic, revealing a quantity of unopened crates marked HULL PATCH KIT, SURPLUS BINOCULARS, ICEBERG RADAR and 1200 INFLATABLE RAFTS. From there on it just gets funnier. Oedekerk specialises in bizarre "filmettes", as he terms them, in which the characters are played by real human thumbs with faces grafted onto them via computer wizardry. Quite apart from the startling realisation that Leonardo DiCaprio actually does look like a thumb wearing a wig, the laughs don't stop from beginning to end. We see the passengers lining up, talent-contest fashion, so they can all have a turn at doing or saying something memorable at the sharp end of the ship. There's a topless scene involving the thumb-incarnation of Kate Winslet. As the ship goes down, one enterprising thumb sells male passengers babies and sex-changes, while the brief love affair between Jake and Geranium is finally eclipsed by the realisation that all the passengers survive and there are "plenty of snacks" for everyone! The perfect antidote to all those unfunny film parodies, Thumbtanic elevates post-pub, kebab-in-hand viewing to the status of an art form. --Roger Thomas

Over the past forty plus years British film director Tony Palmer has established himself as one of the countrys foremost directors of documentary and factual based films. One of Tony Palmers first successes was the film All My Loving which was released in 1968. Some seven years later Tony had the idea encouraged by John Lennon to document the history of popular music. The result was the groundbreaking and award winning series of films made for television under the title All You Need Is Love The full series of films was released in 2008 to great critical and commercial acclaim. Volume 4 addresses one of the most popular and enduring musical genres The Blues. This episode features BB King Leadbelly and Billy Holliday. Blues is a word you have to think about before it can be understood. Contrary to popular belief blues as a form of music does not appear until 1910 or so that is after ragtime and jazz. Blues is not therefore the cornerstone of popular music. Rather it has become an emotional response through music to a variety of oppressive social conditions. The Episode begins in the Delta of Mississippi and follow the progress of itinerant blues musicians to the steel mills and automobile factories of Chicago; from harmonica and fiddle to electric guitar and fashionable nightclub. Finally the Episode shows how blues phrases and harmonies were stolen by white rock n rollers in need of a new gimmick.
The Godfather... Casablanca... Schindler's List... Star Wars... films that altered our way of thinking pushed the boundaries of artisitic skill and entertained millions of movie goers around the world. Demon cop... described as a cult US film it is probably the worst film you will ever see and looks like it was put together in a potting shed lacks any artistic skill and has ""entertained"" seven people to date (six of which are original cast members and the seventh was a lonely Australian with issues). The plot... we think: When a string of unexplained murders hit Colarado Springs the police are puzzled and without a clue as to who or what the murderer might be. A German scientist tries to warn the city about the horrifying menace. It is soon discovered that a police officer (?) has contracted a rare blood disease that periodically transforms him into a demonic beast with an insatiable urge to kill. But does this discovery come too late?
Return with us now to a look back at a more innocent time. This outstanding collection of vintage films rescued from obscurity features four early examples of selling a product or service to a less hardened audience. It wasnt until 1984 that the first ever modern-day infomercial was created but these films from the 1950s and 1960s delivered a message and attempted to brand an image in American minds. We have lovingly restored these little cinematic gems and offer them to you for the very first time on DVD. First from the 1950s comes This Is Roller Skating a free-wheeling examination of the popular sport that also serves as a promotion tool for a line of skates that were sold by the Ware Brothers. Next actor Jock MacGregor hosts Science and Your Garden featuring a look at how to make your greenery great. Then the stars of Leave It to Beaver teach the importance of saving money in Beaver U.S. Saving Bonds and Stamps. Lastly 1968's The Noisy Landscape is a film presented by the American Institute of Architects that argues against putting up too many signs in urban areas.
The Han Brothers are bounty hunters and would be making some good money tracking down criminals... except they keep getting beaten to the catch by the female duo the the two witches. But when both camps want to catch the ultimate fugitive they realize the only way to do it is to join forces. An inspired sense of humour and fantastic fight choreography (led by Jacky Cheung) colours this Hong Kong action parody which dazzles in its own right.
