Robert De Niro gets top billing, but young Leonardo DiCaprio is the revelation of This Boy's Life, an astute, often painful drama of growing up in the 1950s Pacific Northwest, based on the autobiographical novel by Tobias Wolff. DiCaprio plays Tobias, a good kid with a bad boy streak but an unwavering love for his divorced mother (Ellen Barkin). "I want to be a better boy", he promises from under a greasy pompadour, and tries to prove it when she marries single father Dwight (DeNiro), a bully who parents through intimidation and humiliation. A pre-Titanic DiCaprio is magnetic in his first starring role, full of anger, hope and confusion as he drifts back to juvenile delinquency and his intensity gives the true story of survival and triumph its charge. DeNiro is frightening and pathetic as Dwight, and Dwight's youngest daughter is played by future star and vampire slayer Eliza Dushku. --Sean Axmaker

  • Conan The Destroyer [DVD]Conan The Destroyer | DVD | (25/10/2012) from £5.92   |  Saving you £0.07 (1.18%)   |  RRP £5.99

The dark, brooding tone of Conan the Barbarian is replaced in this rousing sequel by a lighter, more humorous tone and one of the campiest casts ever assembled. In Conan the Destroyer, our massively muscular hero (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is assigned by a duplicitous queen (Sarah Douglas) to escort a virgin princess (Olivia d'Abo) on a treacherous trek to a crystal palace where they will retrieve a priceless gemstone. Basketball champ and self-described Lothario Wilt Chamberlain plays Bombaata, a warrior sent on a secret mission to kill Conan, and the androgynous Grace Jones plays Zula, a wild woman who becomes Conan's loyal ally. Some consider this sequel a disappointment but the film makes no apologies for its silliness, and that's the key to its success as gloriously pulpy entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

  • I Love You To Death [1990]I Love You To Death | DVD | (17/11/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

I Love You to Death is a spotty black comedy from Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill)--based on a true story--that stars Kevin Kline as a womanising pizzeria owner whose mousy wife (Tracey Ullman) tries multiple ways of murdering him with the aid of sundry friends and hired hands. The film never picks up the necessary momentum or develops the necessary tone to drive it and one is left picking and choosing which of the performers is at least adequately entertaining. Kline is good but perhaps a bit too theatrical and Joan Plowright is hilarious as his mother-in-law. The funniest joke in the whole thing belongs to William Hurt and Keanu Reeves as deeply stoned, would-be-killers who emerge from a taxi and look as if they can't remember what planet they're on. --Tom Keogh

  • Kurt And Courtney [1998]Kurt And Courtney | DVD | (24/03/2003) from £12.96   |  Saving you £3.03 (18.90%)   |  RRP £15.99

Kurt & Courtney, despite the title, is not really a film about the late Nirvana singer and his wife. Rather, in the gonzo style familiar from other Broomfield productions (Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam, Biggie & Tupac), it's a film about making a film about the late Nirvana singer and his wife. The approach is initially engaging, as Broomfield's self-conscious haplessness is a refreshing change from the infallible omniscience that documentary presenters usually seek to project. But by the end it's difficult to avoid the conclusion that Broomfield is hamming it up somewhat to distract attention from his failure to produce anything substantial. Broomfield sets out to delve into the persistent rumours that Cobain's death was not suicide, but murder possibly arranged with Love's connivance. By way of investigation, he speaks to people who claim, with wildly varying levels of plausibility, acquaintance with Cobain and Love. Some are interesting, particularly Love's arrestingly unpleasant father, who believes that his daughter killed her husband, and Kurt's charmingly guileless aunt. Too many of the rest are stoned, stupid or palpably insane, and Broomfield ends up little the wiser for speaking to any of them. Between interviews, Broomfield tries to manufacture tension with a series of heavy but never-quite-substantiated hints that Love is pulling strings to hamper his progress. The final confrontation between filmmaker and subject is one of the most colossal anti-climaxes ever caught on tape. --Andrew Mueller

Almost a decade after Maggie Smith won an Academy Award for her performance in the film of the same name, Scottish Television undertook a television dramatisation of Dame Muriel Spark's much loved novel. With Geraldine McEwan in the title role, this seven-part series explored more fully and at length the rich and varied characters that populated her work and in so doing, created a superbly satisfying drama, a strikingly different yet complementary partner to its big screen counterpart. Despairing of dreary rain-soaked Newcastle, Miss Brodie is reinvigorated by the opportunity to teach at the Marcia Blaine School for Girls in her beloved Edinburgh. The visionary Miss Brodie soon finds herself at odds with some members of the teaching staff, and some parents, with her outspoken attitudes towards her girls, the curriculum she swiftly casts aside, and her beloved Mussolini. Taking those girls with potential under her wing, the inquisitive, the attractive, the talented, the outcast, Miss Brodie inspires a spirited rebellion in her charges, much to the chagrin of the aptly named Miss Gaunt, whilst befriending likeminded teachers of art and music. "I am a teacher, first, last and always... that is what I am here for; to keep your mind alive until the curriculum catches up with it."

Townspeople Mayor Bowman is up for reelection, Jai is hours away from his wedding, Luke has a party to attend, Lauren is going to lead a funeral, McDermott has a mystery to solve, and Cam has a lawn to mow. This ode to Romero's flesh-eaters is a reminder that sometimes all it takes to bring people together is a horde of hungry zombies trying to rip them apart.
