It became a national institution of comedy and the BBC made seven series. In 1965 the creators Ray Galton and Alan Simpson were approached by Joseph E. Levine to take a pilot for the USA. It was never optioned and a 35mm print was given to Ray Galton as a souvenir. In 1971, Steptoe and Son was eventually re-made for the US market as Sanford and Son. Starring Oscar-nominee Lee Tracy (The Best Man) and Golden Globe-nominee Aldo Ray (From Here to Eternity) The 35mm print of the original 1965 pilot lay undiscovered in Ray Galton's basement until found by Kaleidoscope during a film shoot. McNaughton neither comments on nor flinches at the brutal violence, which reaches its apex in a disturbing camcorder-eye view of a particularly sadistic murder of a middle-class couple, with Henry and Otis smiling through the deed as they record it for their continued pleasure.   The continuing popularity of horror spoofs has created an opportunity for low-quality slashers such as A Crack In the Floor to pass themselves off as humorous. The story follows axe-wielding psychotic hermit Jeremiah who meets a bunch of fresh-faced young hikers and the movie employs every trick in the genre's book but still fails to rise itself above cheap exploitation (best indicated by the tasteless rape of Jeremiah's mother that prefaces the action). Brazenly claiming to feature Tracy Scoggins and Gary Busey--who in reality appear for about five minutes each--the film features young unknowns, the most high profile being Saved By the Bell's Mario Lopez. Which is fitting really because the film, with its mix of teen enthusiasm, redneck stereotypes and crass violence, is little more than that show meets The Dukes of Hazzard meets Deliverance meets Friday the 13th. Recommended for connoisseurs of everything gory and tacky but no-one else. On the DVD: The DVD manages to keep the quality set so spectacularly by the film itself--featuring an appalling trailer, a reprint of the information on the disc's box, biographies of the handful of established actors who make the briefest of cameos and trailers for some equally naff TV movies. For this chercest of romantic comedies George Cukor directs Ruth Gordon and Garon Kanin provide the Oscar-nominated screenplay and a deft cat plays various Damon Runyonesque types including Aldo Ray as a dim-bulb palooka and Charles (Bronson) Buchinski as a tough guy who finds Pat tougher. Sports stars of the day (Like Babe Didrikson Zaharias and Gussie Moran) add to the Jocks-and-Jills fun. Let the games begin! Adam's Rib (Dir. George Cukor 1949): Assistant District Attorney Adam Bonner loves his wife Amanda but doesn't care much for his opposing counsel in a sensational attempted-murder trial - an opponent who happens to be Amanda. Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn were never more evenly matched than when they brought their sharpened wits and prickly affection to this George Cukor -- directed comedy written by Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin. Judy Holliday co-stars as the woman whose shooting of her philandering spouse becomes a feminist cause for Amanda. Hepburn generously saw Holliday's work as a screen test for casting the film of Holliday's stage vehicle Born Yesterday. Hepburn's ploy worked. So does this fine funny movie. Keeper Of The Flame (Dir. George Cukor 1942): ""A determined reporter. A grieving widow. A heart-pounding tale of suspense."" Spencer Tracy plays reporter Steve O'Malley who goes investigates the death of a ""national hero"" named Robert Forrest. He meets his widow Christine (Katharine Hepburn) and falls in love with her. His investigation reveals that the dead hero may have been plotting to overthrow the government and suspects that Christine may have been involved. He confronts her with his evidence and ""she refuses to speak out in her own defense."" He doesn't know if she is innocent or not.
