  Based on the series of novels written by Dorothy L Sayers in the 1920s and 30s, Lord Peter Wimsey was dramatised for TV by the BBC between 1972-5. Ian Carmichael, veteran of British film comedy, played the genial, aristocratic sleuth; Glyn Houston was his manservant Bunter. The pair are similar to PG Wodehouse's Jeeves and Bertie Wooster (whom Carmichael played in an earlier TV adaptation) though here the duo are equal in intelligence, breezing about the country together in Wimsey's Bentley and stumbling with morbid regularity upon baffling murder mysteries to test their wits. Those for whom this series forms hazy memories of childhood might be surprised at its somewhat stagy, lingering interior shots, the spartan paucity of music, the miserly attitude towards locations, especially foreign ones, and the rather genteel, leisurely pace of these programmes, besides which Inspector Morse seems like Quentin Tarantino in comparison. It seems that initially the BBC was reluctant to commission the series and ventured on production with a wary eye on the budget. The Britain depicted by Sayers is, by and large, populated by either the upper classes or heavily accented, rum-do-and-no-mistake lower orders, which some might find consoling. However, the acting is generally excellent and the murder mysteries are sophisticated parlour games, the televisual equivalent of a good, absorbing jigsaw puzzle. There were five feature-length adaptations in all. "Five Red Herrings" is the last and perhaps the least of the series, involving a trout fishing holiday interrupted by the death of a local artist. --David Stubbs

  A sex symbol becomes a thing", says Marilyn Monroe, her voice being approximated by Trudi Jo Marie Keck, who also doubles as the editor of We Remember Marilyn, an historical appreciation of the life of the much-vaunted sex goddess. "I always thought symbols were things you clashed together", she continues to muse, "but if I'm going to be a symbol of anything, I'd rather it be sex than some other things there are symbols for. I know how they'll remember me: 'Here lies Marilyn Monroe, 34-24-36'. But, anyway, they'll remember me." And remember her they do, in this concoction written and directed by Ted Newsom (Ed Wood--Look Back in Angora). Newsom doesn't bother to cite the source for the above words ascribed to Ms. Monroe so it's hard to say where they came from, but they pointedly set the tone for any discussion of sex-symbol iconography. And how better to sum up a career that moved between celebrity and the highest seats of power on a vehicle of sex, and ended early and abruptly. Film clips, photos (where Marilyn the icon truly shone), and a rich array of stock footage form the backdrop for the proceedings.   One of the most popular television comedies of all time The Lucy Show was the follow up to the equally successful I Love Lucy. Whilst I Love Lucy was pre-dominantly set in New York The Lucy Show saw Lucille switch to the West Coast working at a bank as secretary to Mr Carmichael. The series would eventually feature guest appearances from fellow celebrities all of whom wanted to either open accounts or had some dealings with the bank. Not surprisingly Lucille's attempts to assist invariably went wrong. Sometimes things went wrong that weren't in the script - the very first show in this set Lucy And Viv Put In A Shower sees Lucy and Viv trying to install a shower in order to save paying a plumber and become trapped inside as it continues to fill with water. Midway through filming Lucy was unable to return to the surface and was in danger of drowning. Her co-star Vivian Vance realized something was wrong and pulled her to safety then ad-libbed whilst Lucy got her breath back. The remaining cast and crew and live audience were completely unaware of the problem until told after the show was completed. The thirty episodes in this box set has guest appearances from John Wayne Jack Benny Phil Silvers Tennessee Ernie Ford and Robert Boulet among others and feature Lucy in one mishap after another.
