  Remember Candyman, Bernard Rose's fine 1993 urban-legend horror movie based on Clive Barker's screenplay? How about Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh, the inevitable but actually halfway decent second bite at the cherry? Well, in the time-honoured tradition of sequels having less to do with the original with every step down the filmic food chain, the third instalment in the saga of the hook-handed bogeyman had no input from Barker, contains no creepy Phillip Glass score and has no real connection to either of its predecessors in terms of plot. That is unless you count the goon of the title (Tony Todd), returning from whatever ethereal plane he usually resides in to put the wind up his--wait for it--great, great grandaughter, slack-jawed LA art gallery owner Caroline McKeever (Donna D'Errico, hitherto best known for her work on Baywatch). Desperate to claim her soul so he can have a spot of companionship throughout the long days of eternity, Todd promptly sets about slicing and dicing various unfortunate Angelenos, making sure his last living relative gets the blame each and every time. Headed straight for the chair, can D'Errico save LA, and herself, from her heinous ancestor? And, more to the point, can she do so while walking and chewing gum at the same time? Dependent on huge amounts of viscera and its female lead's willingness to shed her clothes, this cheap knock-off still conjures the up the odd moment of unsettling gloom, while Todd is as reliably hammy as ever. All the same, you can't help hoping this is definitely, positively the last time round the block for the franchise: whatever you do, don't stand in front of any mirrors chanting "Candyman 4, Candyman 4, Candyman 4".   1977's A Bridge Too Far by director Richard Attenborough features an all-star cast in an epic rendering of a daring but ultimately disastrous raid behind enemy lines in Holland during the Second World War. A lengthy and exhaustive look at the mechanics of warfare and the price and futility of war, the film is almost too large for its aims but manages to be both picaresque and affecting, particularly in the performance of James Caan. The impressive cast includes Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery and Liv Ullmann among others. While not a classic war film, it nevertheless manages to be a consistently interesting and exciting adventure. --Robert Lane

Equipped with more gadgets than ever, courtesy of the resourceful Q (Desmond Llewellyn), agent 007 escapes an ambush with a personal-size jet pack and takes to the water as he searches for an underwater plane, battles Largo's pet sharks, and finally leads the battle against Largo's scuba-equipped henchmen in a spectacular underwater climax. This thrilling Bond entry became Connery's most successful outing in the series and was remade in 1983 as Never Say Never Again, with Connery returning to the role after a 12-year hiatus. Two audio commentaries flesh out even more of the background: the first is another edited selection of various interviews, the second has editor Peter Hunt in conversation with the host John Quark of the Ian Fleming Foundation, as well as more sundry interview snippets, notably from screenwriter John Hopkins.   In 1979, The Warriors seemed like a frighteningly realistic possible future for The Big Apple. The film's depiction of multiple street gangs no longer content with occupying their own territories was an uncomfortably real issue across New York City. A deceptively simple plot begins with a truce gathering representatives from all the gangs at a meeting. Would-be leader Cyrus has a vision. Unfortunately a member of the Rogues shoots him before we learn what it is, and then pins the blame on the Warriors. With anything up to 60,000 gang soldiers and 20,000 police on their trail, the seven Warrior members beat a hasty retreat any which way they can back to Coney Island. What's really going on, as per Sol Yurick's original novel, is a subtle examination of the seemingly contradictory traits of loyalty and nobility that occur in a close-knit group. Explosions of violence and a disregard for bystanders are secondary to what the characters mean to one another. All this brotherly love is presented with some truly amazing production design and cinematography: though dark, this is a world of colourful night-lights and even more colourful gang uniforms. Historically, this is a movie way past its sell-by date (it certainly won't instigate real life violence now as it did when released), but thematically it remains a worthy exploration of all those unspoken codes of honour. On the DVD: This is a good movie to test the dark end of the spectrum. It's in 1.78:1 and only in mono, but that somehow works for what's little more than a lot of running around in the dark.   When a kickboxing police inspector is murdered, his kickboxing twin brother infiltrates the Russian mob in order to see justice meted out--as painfully as possible. A slimmed-down Jean-Claude Van Damme is surprisingly effective as the lead(s), but the real star here is gritty Hong Kong director Ringo Lam (probably best known for City on Fire, the film that inspired Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs), who makes a lethal American debut with this hard-edged, convoluted film, which uses the identical-sibling gimmick to considerably darker effect than the goofball Double Impact. Some incredible stunt work and a terrifically ruthless final reel make this underrated action film a winner, although fans of Species may be somewhat disappointed that costar Natasha Henstridge never fully displays the assets that made her famous. --Andrew Wright
