John Breen (John Wayne) is a a Kentucky soldier in the early 1800s who pauses on his way home from the Battle of New Orleans to battle land-claim jumpers and woo the daughter of a French general. Oliver Hardy (of Laurel and Hardy fame) does a solo comedic turn as Breen's sidekick.
Marching with his company across Kentucky, soldier John Breen meets Fleurette, the daughter of exiled French general Paul De Marchand, who's the leader of a community settled by Napoleon's former soldiers. Fleurette is engaged to Blake Randolph, a businessman colluding with George Hayden take back the land granted to the French.
