Full of great dialogue ("A woman happy in love, she burns the soufflé; a woman unhappy in love, she forgets to turn on the oven") and wonderful performances, this film is a romantic masterpiece.   Alfred Hitchcock famously observed that movies should be more than just picture postcards of people talking. Sometimes, though, dialogue is all that's needed. Joseph L. Mankiewicz's immaculately scripted All About Eve is a case in point. There are no special effects (unless one considers Marilyn Monroe's wiggle or a scene in which a car breaks down). What the movie offers instead is some of the most coruscating one-liners ever committed to celluloid. The top-name cast certainly know how to put Mankiewicz's words across. Anne Baxter is all doe-eyed charm as Eve, the ruthless aspiring actress who passes herself off as a little girl lost. George Sanders (eminent character actor and the voice of Shere Khan the tiger in The Jungle Book) shows his customary mellowness of sneer as Addison De Witt, theatre critic and professional cynic ("a venomous foot louse" as he's characterised) who helps push Eve up the greasy pole toward success, if not happiness. Best of all is Bette Davis, a soured but still resplendent stage diva, who takes Eve under her wing. ("I'll admit I've seen better days but I'm still not to be had for the price of a cocktail--like a salted peanut", she tells her lover.) The plotting and double-dealing on the screen, described in Sam Staggs' All About All About Eve: The Complete Behind-the-Scenes Story of the Bitchiest Film Ever Made, were matched by what went on behind the scenes. Davis heartily loathed fellow actress Celeste Holm who--ironically enough--plays her best friend. She fell in love with another co-star, the handsome, good-looking Gary Merrill, whom she later married. Backstage dramas are often self-indulgent and stagy affairs, but this one dazzles. --Geoffrey Macnab

  For almost 20 years Audrey Hepburn's pixie-like features lit up Hollywood's silver screens with hit after hit and she became not only a screen icon, but also a style icon (with a little help from Givenchy), and still features high in polls of the world's most beautiful women. It's perhaps no surprise, then, that Paramount have chosen to honour her with a box set of some of her best-known films. However, this is only "some of", with the absence of her dazzling performances in Roman Holiday and My Fair Lady, leaving three out of the four films included here lacking in comparison. Breakfast at Tiffany's is the strongest and certainly the best-loved Hepburn film in this collection, offering beautifully comic performances by both Hepburn and her leading man, George Peppard. Funny Face also makes a welcome entry, if only for the wonderful performance by Fred Astaire; Hepburn, though, was not a strong enough dancer to hold her own against Astaire's brilliance. Sabrina holds its own as the Cinderella story of a chauffeur's daughter who turns into a beautiful society girl, but it was clearly a quick and easy vehicle for Paramount to produce in the wake of Hepburn's success in Roman Holiday. The mysterious entry of the collection is Paris When It Sizzles, probably one of Hepburn's least-known and most quirky films, with two parallel love stories played out on the screen. Although not an obvious hit and hard work in places it offers an interesting screwball performance by Hepburn, even if the sparks did not fly with her screen partner William Holden. On the DVD: The Audrey Hepburn Collection offers a nice clean widescreen transfer for three of its movies, but Sabrina is a full-frame transfer that lacks something in comparison. All but Breakfast at Tiffany's (which has a 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack) are mono sound transfers, which is only a real disappointment in Funny Face because of George and Ira Gershwin's score. The special features are also lacking, with only a trailer offered on two of the films and a mildly interesting documentary on Sabrina. The best is the featurette on Funny Face, which charts the success of Paramount in the 1950s, but offers nothing a film fan would not have known already. All in all this is an attractive box set, but perhaps one for the die-hard Hepburn fan only. --Nikki Disney

Soon to impress with his own intense brilliance Paul Newman made his movie debut in this Biblical saga in the mode of Quo Vadis and The Robe. Set in Rome during the early Christian era it focuses on an ill-fated sculptor sold into slavery and torn between his adoring wife (Pier Angeli) and a wily temptress (Virginia Mayo) - and threatened in his work by a power-mad sorcerer (Jack Palance) bent on overturning Christianity and becoming his own true messiah. The Silver Chalice's cast also includes Lorne Greene E.G. Marshall and a blonde Natalie Wood. But Newman is the movie's heart. This young man director Victor Saville predicted is destined for great things. The Helen Morgan Story (1957): Helen Morgan has beauty talent success. Yet they mean nothing to her without the love of Larry Maddox the bootlegger who leads Helen on and drops her so often she finally hits bottom. Set in the roaring '20s The Helen Morgan Story is also Maddox's story. In his fifth film Paul Newman plays the mobster with slick assuredness. In her final movie Ann Blyth portrays the troubled songstress (and Show Boat original cast member) with Gogi Grant performing vocals on signature Morgan tunes. Appearances by '20s icons Rudy Vallee Walter Winchell and Morgan's real-life accompanist Jimmy McHugh bring bracing authenticity to this tale of a legend whose songs could heal any heart but her own. The Outrage (1964): A notorious bandit confesses to rape and murder and justice is sure to be swift. But wait. Witnesses to the outrage come forward each offering different versions of the events. Does truth lie in the eyes of the beholder? A year after Hud star Paul Newman and director Martin Ritt teamed again and gave the Japanese classic Rashomon an Old West setting crafting a brisk and challenging drama far removed from the norm in film fare (A.H. Weiler The New York Times). Newman drawing deep into his talent reservoir portrays the brazen desperado at the center of conflicting events. Laurence Harvey Claire Bloom Edward G. Robinson and William Shatner offer luminous support in this tale of a quest for truth. And of the humanity or inhumanity behind it. Rachel Rachel (1968): New England schoolteacher Rachel Cameron's life is small and safe. Too small and too safe for a warmhearted woman who wants to do something - anything - to keep from slipping into spinsterhood. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward joined their stellar talents on this powerfully human movie he debuting as a director and she giving one of her hallmark screen performances. Both won New York Film Critics and Golden Globe awards for their work and the film garnered four Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. The Newmans teamed afterward on other masterful films (The Glass Menagerie Mr. & Mrs. Bridge Empire Falls). But for tenderness insight and artistry none surpasses Rachel Rachel. When Time Ran Out (1980): Enough stars to light five marquees. Enough subplots of passion power and greed to fill 10 movies. Plus fiery special effects galore. A South Pacific island's dormant volcano unexpectedly erupts in fury. Among those imperiled are wildcat oil driller Paul Newman hotel baron William Holden and Jacqueline Bisset as a PR executive who must choose between them. Which familiar faces will survive when there's no such thing as safe ground? Watch - and watch out - for yourself. As the lava flows so also flows rare and rousing screen excitement!
