The breakthrough feature of experimental filmmaker Gregg Araki, The Living End also marked a seminal moment in the New Queer Cinema movement of the 1990s. A startling synthesis of thriller, love story, comedy and road movie, it's a consciously political and uncompromising work that confronts mainstream America's fear of AIDs. Luke (Mike Dytri) is a rootless hustler who's determined to live fast, die young, and make a beautiful corpse, while Jon (Craig Gilmore) is a freelance writer whose life and stability are devastated when he finds out he's HIV positive. They meet by chance (or is it fate?), and when Luke kills a cop, they take to the road, embarking on a wild odyssey with devastating consequences. Peppered with film references, specifically to other movies featuring couples on the run and powered by a soundtrack heavy on industrial music, The Living End is propelled by rage and indignation.

The Master Blackmailer is a two-hour 1991 Granada TV adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's story The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton, which for the most part sticks close to the details of the original. Holmes (Jeremy Brett) takes on the reputed king of all blackmailers, Milverton (Robert Hardy), who has made a fortune extorting money from the famous and the blue-blooded and who routinely ruins others' lives when not pleased. Unable to talk Milverton into turning over letters belonging to Lady Eva Brackenwell, Holmes decides to steal them, going undercover as a plumber and even romancing Milverton's housemaid, Agatha (Sophie Thompson), to gain better access in the house. (The ethical Watson, played by Edward Hardwicke, is upset to hear of Holmes's deception of an innocent woman.) The story builds to a surprisingly violent finale, but the real hook is Brett's performance as the disguised detective and the startling suggestion that Holmes's close contact with Agatha truly moved the bachelor sleuth. --Tom Keogh
West Ham United's 2011/12 season ended in the joy of promotion to the Barclays Premier League following victory over Blackpool in the npower Championship Play-Off final at Wembley. The plan for 2012/13 was simple - improve the squad and consolidate the Club's position in the top-flight. The Board and manager Sam Allardyce brought in the experienced Matt Jarvis Mohamed Diame Jussi Jaaskelainen and James Collins and made a statement of intent by signing England centre forward Andy Carroll on a season-long loan from Liverpool. The moves paid dividends as West Ham made a strong start to the campaign scoring a number of fine victories including a 3-1 win over European champions Chelsea. The New Year saw West Ham recover from a slight downturn in form to maintain their position in the relative comfort of mid-table. Off the pitch the Club was also able to celebrate being named anchor concessionaire of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium.
