  • Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure [1990]Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure | DVD | (20/05/2002) from £12.89   |  Saving you £6.09 (61.52%)   |  RRP £15.99

Time travel in the movies is at an all time high in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Bill S Preston Esquire (Alex Winter) and Ted Theodore Logan (Keanu Reeves) are in danger of flunking History class. They're rescued by Rufus (George Carlin), a resident of San Dimas 700 years in the future--a future in which their band Wyld Stallyns has brought about world peace and the best water slides in the universe. Entrusted with a phone booth time machine, they pick up various historical personages to give a colourful stage show for their final exam. The hip 80s rock sensibility paved the way for many comedies that followed Wayne's World, with air guitar and phrases like "bogus" and "dude" entrenching themselves way beyond the film's cult following. The film spawned a number of spin-offs including a bodacious cartoon and comic book series. On the DVD: a trailer and a gallery of 20 behind-the-scenes photos will disappoint fans, even though it's interesting to see director Stephen Herek at work before he moved onto more serious films such as Mr Holland's Opus. However, the film has never looked better than in this transfer, and the effects still look terrific (especially the channels of Time). A Dolby sound mix also does wonders for Beethoven's keyboard improvs. --Paul Tonks

This 1987 thriller was a predictable hit with the teen audience it worked overtime to attract. Like most of director Joel Schumacher's films, it's conspicuously designed to push the right marketing and demographic buttons and, granted, there's some pretty cool stuff going on here and there. Take Kiefer Sutherland, for instance. In Stand by Me he played a memorable bully, but here he goes one step further as a memorable bully vampire who leads a tribe of teenage vampires on their nocturnal spree of bloodsucking havoc. Jason Patric plays the new guy in town, who quickly attracts a lovely girlfriend (Jami Gertz), only to find that she might be recruiting him into the vampire fold. The movie gets sillier as it goes along, and resorts to a routine action-movie showdown, but it's a visual knockout (featuring great cinematography by Michael Chapman) and boasts a cast that's eminently able (pardon the pun) to sink their teeth into the best parts of an uneven screenplay. --Jeff Shannon

  • All Quiet On The Western Front [1979]All Quiet On The Western Front | DVD | (11/06/2007) from £5.48   |  Saving you £4.51 (82.30%)   |  RRP £9.99

Taken from the novel by Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front is a devastating portrait of a small group of German soldiers during World War I. In this 1979 made-for-TV version the star-studded cast is lead by Richard Thomas (The Waltons) as Paul Baumer, strongly supported by screen veterans Ernest Borgnine, Ian Holm and Patricia Neal. As both narrator and star, Thomas occasionally seems to reincarnate his familiar John-Boy persona, but does at least succeed in creating a character that has more levels than his television alter ego. After watching all of his high school buddies loose their lives, Paul returns home a changed man, conflicted in his feelings about the Army and war, and altered from an idealistic schoolboy into a fearful and humble veteran. Although Lewis Milestone's 1930 films remains the cinema's definitive version, director Delbert Mann (Desire Under the Elms, Marty) has done a workmanlike job bringing the novel to the screen. The scenery and costuming in this period piece are well done, and surely contributed to its winning the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Made for TV. Also exceptional are the cinematography and special effects that, while realistically gruesome, truly emphasise the horrors of war. --Zachary Lively, Amazon.com

Edgar Winters musical career began almost forty years ago when he began playing in bands with his elder brother Johnny the famous white bluesman and guitarist. A child prodigy and multi instrumentalist Edgars principal instruments are alto sax keyboards and synthesizer - he was amongst the first musicians to take up and promote the newly-developed instrument. After making a memorable appearance at the legendary Woodstock Festival in 1969 Edgar signed to Epic Records and went on to enjoy considerable success in the early Seventies playing his commercial blend of blues jazz and R&B. Edgar has over twenty albums to his name including the double platinum-selling They Only Come Out At Night. In 1973 he had two major US hit singles with Free Ride and the chart-topping Frankenstein the first pop track to feature a synthesizer lead. Both singles along with Tobacco Road remain firm favourites with rock radio stations throughout the world. All three feature in this concert. Over the years he has kept up a busy worldwide touring schedule and Frankenstein was featured in the soundtrack to the blockbuster movie Wayne's World 2. Hard to imagine now but long before Richard Attenborough became Lord Dickie, benevolent patriarch of British moviedom, he specialised in playing weaselly little thugs and punks. Brighton Rock, adapted from Graham Greene's classic novel, offered him one of his best early roles as Pinkie, juvenile leader of a seedy gang of racetrack crooks in the Sussex seaside town. When it seems an innocent young waitress may know too much about one of their killings, Pinkie decides to keep her quiet by marrying her. But in Greene's world of guilt-ridden Catholicism and inexorable doom, it was never going to be that easy. Is the famous twist ending a cop-out? That depends just how much irony you read into it. But the Brighton atmosphere, all tawdry gaiety shot through with a crackling undercurrent of fear, is so vivid you can smell it. Made with a cool, dispassionate eye by the Boulting Brothers (before they turned jokey with the likes of I'm Alright Jack, for instance) and superbly shot by Harry Waxman, this is one of Britain's few great contributions to the noir thriller cycle. Young Dickie, twitchy, vicious and terrified, is a revelation--and don't miss William Hartnell, the original Dr Who, as his cynical sidekick. --Philip Kemp

Blues artist Johnny Winter is a familiar name to anybody that appreciates slash-and-burn guitar and Winter aficionados seem to be equally split between the musician's 1970s-era blues-n-roots-rock material on Blue Sky Records and his later house-rockin' recordings for the Alligator and Point Blank labels during the 1980s and '90s. Fans of the former will rejoice when our friends at Music Video Distributors release Winter's Live Through The '70s DVD. Live Through The '70s collects official archival video of a number of classic Winter performances from disparate sources such as a 1970 appearance on Danish TV and a Royal Albert Hall performance in London that same year. The 111-minute DVD also includes a 1973 broadcast of Winter from Don Kirshner's Rock Concert; a 1974 Winter performance from the Blues Summit in Chicago; a 1974 performance at Musikladen in Bremen Germany; and a 1979 appearance on Rockpalast in Germany. Among the songs captured on tape are Winter faves like Johnny B. Goode Rock & Roll Hootchie Koo and Mean Town Blues. Live Through The '70s deserves a place next to the television for any Johnny Winter fan or even for those that appreciate lively and electric blues-rock guitar.
