One of Brian De Palma's most acclaimed films, this brilliant fusion of the obsessive sleuthing of Blow-up and The Conversation with themes drawn from real-life political scandals (the JFK assassination, Chappaquiddick, Watergate) starts with sound technician Jack Terry (John Travolta) accidentally recording what might be explosive evidence of a deadly conspiracy. Brilliantly shot by the then recent Oscar-winner Vilmos Zsigmond, this terrifically stylish thriller co-stars Nancy Allen as the eyewitness who becomes the unwitting target of John Lithgow's serial killer... as he ruthlessly attempts to bury all the evidence. It's also a film about the filmmaking process: Terry is originally hired to work on the low-budget slasher film Coed Frenzy, and later turns his technical skills to much more serious use as he tries to reconstruct a political assassination on film in a way that will stand up in court. Brian De Palma writes and directs this thriller starring John Travolta. Sound technician Jack Terry (Travolta) is out recording atmospheric noise for a low-budget horror film when he witnesses a car accident and abandons his recording to help the victims, a presidential hopeful and his escort Sally (Nancy Allen). With the politician dead at the scene, Jack escorts Sally to a nearby hospital. Back at his workshop, Jack listens closely to the tape and discovers evidence of a political conspiracy. Along with footage shot of the accident by fellow witness Manny Karp (Dennis Franz), Jack is convinced his recording captures an assassination attempt but his attempts to expose the truth are silenced at every turn. Meanwhile, Sally becomes the target of a Philadelphia serial killer as she too is drawn into Jack's investigation.
While outdoors recording sound effects for a movie audio technician Jack Terri hears a tire blowout and a car crash Before the car sinks into the river he manages to save the female passenger from drowning Because the other passenger was a presidential candidate Jack suspects that the accident was a political murder Afterwards Jack falls in love with Sally the woman he rescued and learns that she's been in cahoots with Manny a sleazy photographer who's operating a blackmail scheme As part of their scam Manny photographs Sally with important men in what appear to be compromising situations Jack starts to wonder whether he's being paranoid or whether things are not quite what they seem Then the assassin turns his attention to Jack and Sally and Jack has to use every special effects trick in the book to keep them both alive
