Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine star in this classic US drama directed by William Wyler. Based on the play by Lillian Hellman, the film follows former college friends Martha (MacLaine) and Karen (Hepburn) as they realise their dream of running a private girls' school. Things become complicated however when one of their students causes a scandal by vindictively spreading a rumour that the pair are having a lesbian relationship, a move which leaves the future of the school in doubt and Martha and Karen in a battle to save their reputations. The cast also includes James Garner, Miriam Hopkins and Veronica Cartwright.
