Based on John le Carré's first novel, Call for the Dead (which introduced spymaster George Smiley), The Deadly Affair sees an ageing British secret agent (James Mason) set out to uncover the truth behind a government employee's apparent suicide. Eschewing the glamour of the era's Bond thrillers, Lumet's chilling and intelligent take on the spy drama presents a palpable and darkly sinister picture of Cold War intrigue. The exemplary cast also includes Maximilian Schell, Harriet Andersson, Harry Andrews, Roy Kinnear and Lynn Redgrave. INDICATOR LIMITED EDITION SPECIAL... Drama directed by Sidney Lumet, based on the novel 'Call for the Dead' by John le Carré. Charles Dobbs (James Mason) is a British intelligence officer who is sent to investigate an anonymous letter sent to the Foreign Secretary accusing a key officer, Samuel Fennan (Robert Flemyng), of communist affiliation. When Fennan commits suicide Dobbs begins to suspect that his wife, a concentration camp survivor, may hold the key to his despair. But the Foreign Office wants to drop the case so Dobbs hires soon-to-retire Detective Inspector Mendel (Harry Andrews) to delve further into the circumstances behind Fennan 's death - which turn out to be more sinister than Dobbs could have imagined.
