Jacques Cousteau – naturalist, biologist, diver and the pioneer of underwater filmmaking – won the Best Documentary FeatureAcademy Award for this, his second film, in 1964. The film is a document of a brave experiment in which a team of divers, scientists and engineers attempted to live for a month in a purpose-built base rooted to the sea floor. As the crew of ‘Oceanauts’ explore the Red Sea in their metallic silver wetsuits, with Cousteau investigating the deepest depths in his custommade yellow submarine, the result is a staggering mix of naturedocumentary and far-out 1960s science fiction. Only this time the fiction is real!
Korn came out of California in the early nineties and went on to become one of the most globally successful metal acts of their generation. They continue to play live to vast crowds and have record sales in the millions. This concert from Montreux in 2004 is their only performance at the festival to date. It was to be one of the last shows to feature the band's original line-up with guitarist Brian Welch leaving the group a few months later. The normally reserved Montreux crowd is transformed by Korn into seething rocking mass with the largest (& probably the first!) mosh pit ever seen in the famous Stravinski Auditorium. In this mesmerizing documentary acclaimed director Werner Herzog explores the life and death of amateur grizzly bear expert and wildlife preservationist Timothy Treadwell. Treadwell lived unarmed among the bears for thirteen summers and filmed his adventures in the wild during his final five seasons. In October 2003 Treadwell's remains along with those of his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were discovered near their campsite in Alaska's Katmai National Park and Reserve. They had been mauled and devoured by a grizzly the first known victims of a bear attack in the park. (The bear suspected of the killings was later shot by park officials). Herzog plumbs not only the mystery of wild nature but also the mystery of human nature as he chronicles Treadwell's final years in the wilderness. Herzog uses Treadwell's own startling documentary footage to paint a nuanced portrait of a complex and compelling figure while exploring larger questions about the uneasy relationship between man and nature.
The story continues... Ralph Macchio and Noriyuki Pat Morita re-create the roles that brought them international acclaim in The Karate Kid Part 2. Karate student Daniel Larusso (Macchio) accompanies his wise and whimsical teacher Mr. Miyagi (Morita) to his ancestral home in Okinawa. For the boy it's a journey to an exotic new world offering new clues to his mentor's secret past. For Miyagi it's an opportunity to see his father one last time and to rekindle a romance with his childhood sweetheart (Nobu McCarthy). But Miyagi's return also re-ignites a bitter feud with long-time enemy Sato (Danny Kamekona) - a feud that involves young Daniel in a brilliant collision of cultures and combat. Now far away from the tournaments the cheering crowds and the safety of home Daniel will face his greatest challenge ever when the teacher becomes student and the price of honour is life itself.
Scientist Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) has, to put it mildly, anger management issues. His quiet life as a brilliant researcher working with cutting edge genetic technology conceals a nearly forgotten and painful past. His ex-girlfriend and equally brilliant fellow researcher, Betty Ross (Jennifer Connelly), has tired of Bruce's cordoned off emotional terrain and resigns herself to remaining an interested onlooker to his quiet life. Which is exactly where Betty finds herself during one of the early trials in Banner's groundbreaking research. A simple oversight leads to an explosive situation and Bruce makes a split-second decision; his heroic impulse saves a life and leaves him apparently unscathed-his body absorbing a normally deadly dose of gamma radiation.Acclaimed Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee turns his masterful eye to adapting the classic Marvel Comics character for the big screen. Setting out to faithfully transfer the Hulk comic book character from four-color paneled page to motion picture screen, Lee combines all the elements of a blockbuster visual effects-intensive superhero movie with the brooding romance and tragedy of Universal's classic horror films. Staying true to the early subversive spirit of the Hulk as envisioned by its creators (Stan Lee and Jack Kirby) while also tuning the tale to current dangerous times, Lee presents a portrait of a man at war with himself and the world, both a superhero and a monster, a means of wish fulfillment and a nightmare...
