This unnerving procedural thriller painstakingly details an all-too-plausible nightmare scenario in which a mechanical failure jams the United States military's chain of command and sends the country hurtling toward nuclear war with the Soviet Union. Working from a contemporary best seller, screenwriter WALTER BERNSTEIN (The Front) and director SIDNEY LUMET (Network) wrench harrowing suspense from the doomsday fears of the Cold War era, making the most of a modest budget and limited sets to create an atmosphere of clammy claustrophobia and astronomically high stakes. Starring HENRY FONDA (12 Angry Men) as a coolheaded U.S. president and WALTER MATTHAU (Charade) as a trigger-happy political theorist, Fail Safe is a long-underappreciated alarm bell of a film, sounding an urgent warning about the deadly logic of mutually assured destruction. Kaneto Shindô's Kuroneko (Yabu no naka no kuroneko or The Black Cat Inside the Bamboo Grove) — released to great acclaim in 1968 — is a sparse atmospheric horror story ascribing to the director’s philosophy of using beauty and purity to evoke emotion. Eccentric and more overtly supernatural than its breakthrough companion piece Onibaba Kuroneko revisits similar themes to reveal a haunting meditation on duty conformity and love. In this magnificently eerie and romantic film — loosely based on the Japanese folktale The Cat’s Return — a mother and daughter-in-law (Nobuko Otowa and Kiwako Taichi) are raped and murdered by pillagers but return from the dead as vampiric cat spirits intent on revenge. As the ghosts lure soldiers into the bamboo groves a fearless samurai Gintoki (Kichiemon Nakamura) is sent to stop their reign of terror. Kuroneko remains a standout film of the kaidan eiga genre of period ghost stories often based on old legends or kabuki plays. Marking Shindô’s first use of wire work as Yone and Shige battle against samurai blades the film is subtly complimented by Kiyomi Kuroda’s award-winning chiaroscuro cinematography Hikaru Hayashi’s vibrant score and riveting performances from many of the greatest actors of Japan’s golden age of film.

In the mid-19th century, hundreds of thousands of Europeans emigrated to faraway South America. It was a desperate bid to escape the famine, poverty and despotism that ruled at home. Jakob, the younger of two brothers, dreams about leaving his small village for adventures in the wild Brazilian jungle. Everyone who encounters Jakob is drawn into the maelstrom of his dreams: his parents, his belligerent brother Gustav, and above all, Henriette, the daughter of a gem cutter fallen on hard times. His brother's imminent return from military service, however, is destined to shatter Jakob's world and his love for Henriette.

Jodorowsky's most violent and notorious film sees the director play 'The Mole' of the title: a black-clad. master gunfighter. In the first half, El Topo journeys across the desert dreamscape with his young son (Brontis Jodorowsky) to duel with four sharp-shooting Zen masters, who each bestow a Great Lesson before they die. In the second half, El Topo becomes the guru of a subterranean tribe of deformed outcasts who he must liberate from depraved cultists in a neighbouring town.
