  Ten years after becoming the youngest winner of the Caméra d Or, Naomi Kawase returned to Cannes and claimed the prestigious Grand Prix for The Mourning Forest [Mogari no mori], a beautiful and contemplative portrait of grief. Machiko (Machiko Ono) is a young nurse who still carries the burden of her young son s death. Shigeki (Shigeki Uda) is an elderly widower and a resident at the nursing home where Machiko works. After celebrating Shigeki s birthday, Machiko takes him for a drive in the countryside, but their car breaks down and Shigeki absconds into the nearby forest. Machiko has no choice but to follow, and they become lost in the dense woodlands, before their fates eventually become entwined. Drawing comparisons to Shohei Imamura (particularly his Palme d Or winning The Ballad of Narayama) and Terence Malick, Naomi Kawase s The Mourning Forest is a hauntingly beautiful, symbolically rich masterpiece, and The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the film for the first time ever on Blu-ray, in a special Dual Format edition. In the evenings, he takes art classes and paints until the early hours of the morning. He is resolutely loyal and well-mannered towards his bitter mother, Elizabeth (Redgrave), who tries to dissuade her bachelor son from pursuing his artistic ambitions and never misses a chance to tell him what a disappointment he is to her. Adrian Noble's wonderfully observed film gently reveals how Lowry's snobbish mother is the obstacle preventing him from fulfilling his artistic ambition, as he desperately tries to create something that might make her happy. This lovely film is punctuated by delightful moments of humour, as it depicts the impact a bitterly obsessive mother had on one of this country's greatest artists

  Pierce Brosnan assumed the role of James Bond for the first time in Goldeneye, the 17th entry in the series. Brosnan looks a little light on the big screen under any circumstances, and he does take some getting used to as 007. But this busy film keeps him hopping as freelance terrorists from the former Soviet Union get their hands on super-high-tech weapons. The film's challenge is to bring free-spirited Bond up to date in the age of AIDS and in the aftermath of the cold war: director Martin Campbell (The Mask of Zorro) succeeds on both counts with a cheeky hint of irony. The best moment in the film is a chase scene that finds Bond tearing up the streets of Moscow in a tank. But Brosnan's most interesting contributions are reminiscent of the dark streak that occasionally showed up in Sean Connery's Bond. --Tom Keogh
