With the Japanese currently leading the way in thought-provoking cinematic violence it’s only fitting that Kenta Fukasaku’s Battle Royale is being touted as A Clockwork Orange for the 21st century. Based on the novel by Koshun Takami, the film opens with a series of fleeting images of unruly Japanese schoolkids, whose bad behaviour provides a justification for the "punishments" which will ensue. To be honest, anyone who has grown up with Grange Hill will view these aggressive teenagers’ acts as pretty moderate, but in the context of Japanese culture, their lack of respect is a challenge to the traditional values of respecting your elders. Once the prequel has been dispensed with the classmates are drugged and awaken on an island where they find they have been fitted with dog collars that monitor their every move. Instructed by their old teacher ("Beat" Takeshi) with the aid of an upbeat MTV-style video, they are told of their fate: after an impartial Lottery they have been chosen to fight each other in a three-day, no-rules contest, the "Battle Royale". Their only chance of survival in the "Battle" is through the death of all their classmates. Some pupils embrace their mission with zeal, while others simply give up or try to become peacemakers and revolutionaries. However, the ultimate drive for survival comes from the desire to protect the one you love. The film looks like a war-flick on occasions, with intense Apocalypse Now-style imagery (check out the classical score blasted over the tannoys with sweeping shots of helicopters). Yet, Battle Royale works on many different levels, highlighting the authorities’ desperation to enforce law and order and the alienation caused by the generation gap. But whether you view the film as an important social commentary or simply enjoy the adrenalin-fuelled violence, this is set to become cult viewing for the computer game generation and beyond. On the DVD: Battle Royale has been re-released in this new and improved version. Now offered in progressive scan, utilising NTSC technology which has enhanced the picture quality. Please be aware though that not all DVD players are compatible, if unsure your best to opt for the first release.--Nikki Disney

  • Pasolini Blu-ray Collection (6-disc set)Pasolini Blu-ray Collection (6-disc set) | Blu Ray | (02/11/2015) from £39.99   |  Saving you £30.00 (75.02%)   |  RRP £69.99

The Pasolini collection brings together six controversial films by the legendary Italian filmmaker, including his bawdy 'Trilogy of Life' films (The Decameron, Canterbury Tales and Arabian Nights), all of which feature scores by the Academy Award winning composer Ennio Morricone. Also included is Pasolini's brutal adaptation of Euripedes' Medea, starring opera sensation Maria Callas in her only film role, the scandalous modern drama Theorem, featuring a youthful Terence Stamp, and Pasolini's final, shocking film, Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom, based on the writings of the infamous Marquis De Sade. These intense, shocking and often extreme films challenged audiences and critics upon their original release, and they continue to do so today. Pasolini's legacy can be felt in the raw and energetic cinema of independent filmmakers such as Miike Takashi (whose Visitor Q is a re-interpretation of Theorem) and Abel Ferrara (whose latest film explores Pasolini's final days, with Willem Dafoe (The Last Temptation of Christ) playing the great director).

  • Day Of The Outlaw (1959) [Masters of Cinema] Dual Format [Blu-ray & DVD]Day Of The Outlaw (1959) | Blu Ray | (07/12/2015) from £10.99   |  Saving you £7.00 (63.69%)   |  RRP £17.99

Eureka Entertainment to release DAY OF THE OUTLAW, the last western made by Andre De Toth set in a snowed-in Wyoming town and starring Robert Ryan and Burl Ives, available for the first time in the UK and on Blu-ray in a Dual Format edition for the first time anywhere in the world on 7 December 2015. As in George Stevens’ Shane, the place of action of Andre De Toth’s demented Western Day of the Outlaw is once again the state of Wyoming and the contested land of the homesteaders. Day of the Outlaw was one of Westerns at the twilight of the studio era in which anything might go, and director De Toth, the creator of two infamous idiosyncratic films — the groundbreaking 3D House of Wax and the naturalistic Sterling Hayden-starring noir Crime Wave — here firmly established his pedigree as one of the maverick directors such as Nicholas Ray for whom boundaries proved only elastic consequence. The magnificent Robert Ryan portrays Blaise Starrett (surname itself an evocation of the family in the earlier Stevens film Shane) who comes between a landowner (Alan Marshal) and his wife (Tina Louise). But after a band of outlaws ride into town headed by Jack Bruhn (Burl Ives), Starrett must rise to the occasion and defend the hostage townsfolk while redeeming his own advances towards the landowner’s wife. Filmed on a shoestring budget, Day of the Outlaw proved to be an enduring touchstone for the directors of the French New Wave; it came to exemplify De Toth’s resourcefulness around budgetary limitations and the (here often snow-strewn) difficulties of the shoot. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Andre De Toth’s Day of the Outlaw in a Dual Format edition for the first time in the UK.

  • JFK [Blu-ray] [1992]JFK | Blu Ray | (04/11/2013) from £7.99   |  Saving you £0.46 (5.76%)   |  RRP £8.45

Not a John F Kennedy biopic, but a film of New Orleans' attorney Jim Garrison's investigation into the President's assassination, JFK is that rarest of things, a modern Hollywood drama which credits the audience with serious intelligence and ultimately proves itself a great film. Oliver Stone's film has the archetypal story, visual scale and substance to match; not just a gripping real-life conspiracy thriller, but a fable for the fall of the American dream (a theme further explored by the director in Nixon and Any Given Sunday). JFK doesn't reveal exactly what happened in Dallas on 22 November 1963--those who knew generally took their secrets to the grave--but marshals a vast wealth of facts and plausible theories, trusting the audience to draw its own conclusions. Following less than a year after Dances With Wolves (1990), these two epics mark the high point of Kevin Costner's career and the vast supporting cast here, including Gary Oldman, Kevin Bacon, Sissy Spacek and Donald Sutherland, is superb. Quite simply the best American political film ever made. --Gary S Dalkin
