  The adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have given Disney their biggest hits of the decade. And while neither of the two sequels have come close to matching the first, there’s plenty for the family to enjoy across the trilogy of films here. The first film is a belter. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl introduces us to Sparrow for the first time (earning Johnny Depp an Oscar nomination in the process), as well as the talented cast of supporting characters. The fun though, is when either Depp or Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa are on the screen. Throw in lots of witty banter, some superb action sequences and a running time that doesn’t outstay its welcome, and you have a modern day blockbuster classic. The sequels are far flabbier. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest does boast some outstanding effects work, and does introduce Bill Nighy as Davy Jones, but it also meanders around a lot, and tests the patience of its audience more than it should. Not as much as Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End though, which does compensate by having the best high definition transfer of the lot, and a stunning battle sequence near the end, but does ask that you stick with it through choppy waters. With a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie setting sail in the summer of 2011 though, it’s going to be a joy to see the further adventure of Depp’s simply superb Captain Jack. And if you want to enjoy his work to date on the franchise, and enjoy one of the best blockbuster movies of the last decade, then this is a very good box set to get.   Space: 1999: Super Space Theater Blu-Ray:Capitalising on the success of the first two Space:1999 movies (episodes edited together as cinema features in the wake of Star Wars) ITC created what would ultimately become thirteen full-length movies for cable and home video under the banner Super Space Theater. Four of these were made from episodes of Space:1999, though they included new music in places and (for Alien Attack) additional scenes. Each of these four movies has been rebuilt from the High-Definition restorations created for the series episodes - they are presented here in their original 4:3 full screen aspect ratio alongside new 16:9 widescreen special editions, with both Alien Attack and Destination Moonbase-Alpha featuring enhanced special effects. All four special editions have been re-edited, restoring scenes and adding material not in the original presentation.   Once Upon a Midnight Dreary... Although The Raven is one of Edgar Allan Poe's most famous poems the lack of a narrative hook initially stumped screenwriting legend Richard Matheson (I Am Legend The Incredible Shrinking Man Duel) until he realised that the idea of adapting the poem was so ridiculous that he might as well make it a comedy. And what a comedy! Vincent Price Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff play rival magicians whose paths cross when Dr Craven (Price) hears Dr Bedlo tap-tap-tapping on his windowpane. For Bedlo has been turned into a raven by Dr Scarabus (Karloff) and when transformed back into his old self he naturally vows revenge. But the scripted rivalry is as nothing compared to three great horror masters relentlessly upstaging each other - even a young Jack Nicholson as Bedlo's son barely gets a look-in. If there's not much authentic Poe in these sorcery shenanigans the sets and cinematography more than compensate: director Roger Corman was by then a master of conjuring Gothic atmosphere on a very modest budget.
