It's rural England in the Early 18th Century. A deformed skull is discovered - it has an intact eye and strange fur but when that skull disappears the village, especially its children, becomes afflicted by its supernatural power.Starring Linda Hayden and Patrick Wymark, this quintessential folk horror produced by legendary British film company Tigon and directed by Piers Haggard, is a heady concoction of old-style horror and sex, served up in an unnervingly modern visual presentation. It explores and seems to unpick the dawning decade's fears about promiscuity and the generation gap, poking fun at the moral majority's lack of tolerance toward youth culture and non-Christian belief systems. Based on the DC character, Kara Zor-El (series star MELISSA BENOIST) decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents' help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster parents, Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers (guest stars DEAN CAIN and HELEN SLATER), Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (series star CHYLER LEIGH), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin, Superman (TYLER HOECHLIN) in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later, Kara was living a normal life in National City and still concealing her powers, when a plane crash threatened Alex's life and Kara took to the sky to rescue her. In the aftermath, Kara decided she could no longer sit on the sidelines and came out as Supergirl. She now balances her job as a reporter for CatCo Worldwide Media, alongside her famous friend and Editor in Chief, James Olsen (series star MEHCAD BROOKS) with her work for the Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO), a super-secret government organization run by her sister Alex. At the DEO, Kara also gets help from her friends, J'onn J'onzz (series star DAVID HAREWOOD), the Martian Manhunter, Brainac-5 (new series regular JESSE RATH), and Lena Luthor (series regular KATIE McGRATH), who doesn't know Supergirl's true identity is that of her best friend Kara Danvers. In season four, Supergirl is facing a bigger threat than she's ever faced before a new wave of anti-alien sentiment, spreading across National City that's fomented by Agent Liberty (new series regular SAM WITWER). As Kara mentors a new reporter at CatCo, Nia Nal (new series regular NICOLE MAINES), and tries to use the power of the press to shine a light on the issues threatening to tear the city apart, Supergirl takes to the skies to battle the many villains who rise up in this era of divisiveness. But how does Supergirl battle a movement when she, herself an alien, represents one of the main things people are fearful of?
A milestone of the silent film era and one of the first "art films" to gain international acclaim, this eerie German classic from 1919 remains the most prominent example of German expressionism in the emerging art of the cinema. Stylistically, the look of the film's painted sets--distorted perspectives, sharp angles, twisted architecture--was designed to reflect (or express) the splintered psychology of its title character, a sinister figure who uses a lanky somnambulist (Conrad Veidt) as a circus attraction. But when Caligari and his sleepwalker are suspected of murder, their novelty act is surrounded by more supernatural implications. With its mad-doctor scenario, striking visuals, and a haunting, zombie-like character at its centre, Caligari was one of the first horror films to reach an international audience, sending shock waves through artistic circles and serving as a strong influence on the classic horror films of the 1920s, 30s, and beyond. It's a museum piece today, of interest more for its historical importance, but The Cabinet of Dr Caligari still casts a considerable spell. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
