One of legendary director Douglas Sirk's most cherished passion projects this spectacular adaptation of William Faulkner's Pylon has risen in stature to become one of his most acclaimed films. Reuniting with his core creative team from oil tycoon saga Written on the Wind Sirk this time examined the marginal lives and lost souls living one rung from the bottom with surpassing delicacy and artistry. Rock Hudson stars as journalist Burke Devlin fascinated by the sordid lives of a trio eking out a living in carnival circuit daredevil air shows - Roger Shumann (Robert Stack) former WWI fighter pilot forced into races and parachute routines with the help of his wife LaVerne (Dorothy Malone) and faithful mechanic Jiggs (Jack Carson). Evoking Depression-era New Orleans with glorious black-and-white CinemaScope photography Sirk's spellbinding chronicle of personal obsession romantic longing and irreconcilable desires now appears as one of the most extraordinary films to come out of 1950s Hollywood. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present The Tarnished Angels on Blu-ray for the first time. The film boasts the best of the Bond title songs (this one sung on a dreamy track by Nancy Sinatra), but the movie itself is one of the weaker ones of the Sean Connery phase of the 007 franchise. The story concerns an effort by the evil organisation SPECTRE to start a world war, but the not-so-super villain behind the plot is the awfully civilised Donald Pleasence. The thin script is by Roald Dahl (shouldn't we have expected a better Bond nemesis from the creator of mad genius Willy Wonka?), and direction is by British veteran Lewis Gilbert (Alfie). But the movie can't hold a candle to Dr. No, From Russia with Love, or Goldfinger. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.comOn the DVD: This was another troubled production according to the insightful "making of" documentary: director and producers luckily avoided boarding a plane out of Tokyo that crashed and killed everyone on board; the Japanese actresses couldn't speak English and one threatened suicide if she was dropped from the part; and the aerial cameraman filming the helicopter fight had his leg sliced off by a rotor blade. Maurice Binder's evocative main title designs are the subject of the second documentary, "Silhouettes", in which his colleagues voiceboth their admiration of his art and frustration at his chaotic working practices. The commentary is another edited selection of interviews with principal cast and crew. An animated storyboard sequence, trailers, radio spots and a handsome booklet add up to another winning entry in this series. --Mark Walker

Eureka Entertainment to release HELL AND HIGH WATER; Samuel Fuller's Cold War submarine adventure starring Richard Widmark; presented on Blu-ray from a stunning 4K restoration, as a part of The Masters of Cinema Series. Available from 7 December 2020, the release will be limited to 1000 copies only. In the summer of 1953, it was announced that an atomic bomb of foreign origin had been exploded somewhere outside of the United States... This is the story of that explosion. Starting with a nuclear explosion and only escalating from there (Fuller was a master of the opening scene If a story doesn't give you a hard-on in the first couple of scenes, throw it in the goddamn garbage.), Hell and High Water is a white-knuckle Cold War thriller that would have a huge influence on the future of blockbuster cinema (Steven Spielberg was so enamoured with the film that he kept a print in his car for many years). When military intelligence suggests a secret atomic base is being covertly set-up on an island near Japan, former US Navy commander Adam Jones (Richard Widmark) is sent on a covert mission to prevent a nuclear attack that could trigger World War 3. Director Luigi Bazzoni's unique vision of 'FOOTPRINTS ON THE MOON' is brought to life by the striking cinematography of Vittorio Storaro (three-time Oscar® winner including 'Apocalypse Now'). Florinda Bolkan ('Flavia The Heretic') delivers a masterful, nuanced performance bringing captivating depth to the character of Alice - a young translator grappling with memory loss. Tormented by nightmare visions of a sinister scientist (Klaus Kinski) deliberately abandoning astronauts to die on the Moon, Alice is struggling to recall three missing days. A mysterious postcard beckons her to the enigmatic island of Garma. Once there, an unsettling revelation unfolds: the inhabitants recognise her presence during the unaccounted-for days, not as Alice, but as another person named Nicole. Marine Vacth (Jeune et Jolie) plays Chloé, a young woman who falls in love with her psychoanalyst Paul (Dardennes favourite Jérémie Renier). When they decide to move in together, everything seems perfect until a series of discoveries lead her to suspect that he may be living a double life. As she searches for the truth, Chloé s investigations plunge her into a dark and bewildering world of smoke, mirrors and doppelgangers where nothing is as it seems, and no one can be trusted. François Ozon returns with L Amant Double, a sleek but gleefully irreverent erotic thriller that sees the prolific French auteur ramping up the sexual tension while keeping his tongue firmly in his cheek. Combining Hitchcockian intrigue with nods to Brian de Palma and David Cronenberg, this is a theatre of excess that delights in keeping its audience guessing. A whirlwind of heightened senses and amped-up drama, L Amant Double is filthy, flamboyant and a whole lot of fun.
